|
|
Hey guys! I’ve done a few searches on here for engine option in California as well as some google searches but couldn’t find what I was looking for. Pretty much my bus lost oil on the highway and engine seized. This bus has been in the family for 40yrs and we’ve done our fair share of rebuilds but now I’m looking to do a major engine overhaul. I’ve been thinking about a suburu conversion but I don’t wanna go that route as I wanna stick with air cooled.
I’m looking to do this job right and I have a decent budget so with that said what performance engine options do you guys recommend. I’m currently in the Bay Area but also looking at engines in socal.
Thanks you guys for your help! 🤙🏽 _________________ @menashootz

I’m open to extra cc’s
anyone have experience with Power Haus vw parts in Torrence?

I wasnt aware that Powerhaus worked with type 4 engines. I may be wrong though.
That said, an increase in displacement is always nice, but the real catch with these engines is to increase the efficiency. With the stock F.I. and the cat, visual inspection etc. its not that easy, but doable. If you want succes you need to build the engine very specific and to the Z or it will not work. But if you do that you can release about 30 hp more over stock. _________________ https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=435993 |

I see, I’m not too experienced with the process so I was looking to take it to kombi haus in sacramnto as they rebuilt my head 5yrs ago. As for the powerhouse I’m not sure what type it is.
Thanks for all the reply’s! _________________ @menashootz

I doubt they do type 4's.
Call Annibal Chico in Arcadia. Keeping smog legal is the shitty part. They can run so good when you don't need to do all the smog BS.

IMine is a type 2 not type 4. Thanks for all the reply’s! |
The engines are either a T1 (bug based), or a T4 (late bay bus based).

Easy way to straighten that out is an engine code or a picture. But I don´t think the type 2´s even came into the US in ´78 with type 1 based engines. So it is 99% certain a 2 liter type 2 engine, which is type 4 based. _________________ https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=435993 |

You guys are correct. It’s a type 4 motor

Do an electric conversion, then take it in to get smogged |

How would an electric converted vehicle fail a smog test? |

Because it's not the original engine configuration. |
The website says electric powered vehicles are exempt. I see no exception for conversions. |

It was kind of a snarky comment about the absurdity of CA smog regulations…
Having a smog tech look at an L-Jet bus can be very amusing. _________________ Bus Motor Build

Back in 1979 I had to smog my ‘69 Squareback that had a bone stock 1964 Buick 155 hp 225 V6 installed using a Kennedy adapter kit.
I had to go to a CA state referee station and have them approve it, I’m sure with the Buick engine being unmodified from air cleaner to exhaust manifolds that definitely helped.
I’m not sure how it works nowadays but I would think a CA state referee station if they still exist would approve an electric conversion no problem.
