Awesome thread guys, really enjoyed reading through and seeing all the images.
Such a shame that the V303 convertible survived the war, but was lost sometime after. They really went to town on this one, making the rear end so much better than the subsequent cut down sedan/saloon versions.
Did anyone notice on the picture where its being pushed into the workshop, as yet unfinished (no light housing on rear lid and no rear bumper) that there are no holes for the bumper irons despite the rear fender/ wings being painted already?
I noticed on another thread about the toy version of this car being a burgundy red colour, but the colour pictures of the cornerstone ceremony don't seem to agree with the theory that the car was also a burgundy red, unless it was re painted - see comment above regarding the bumper holes. _________________ When I think of something to say - I'll be the first to know

In finster's 2-page "Stern" magazine spread above, the large photo shows the 5 last owners all gathered in the car which was now in the Wolfsburg factory collection. Each of the 5 are seen in their period small snapshots. Amazing that the original 25 hp engine was still ticking along after the car covered a total of nearly half a million kilometers (~300,000 miles). |

Actually two cars were without bumpers or holes for the bumper irons. The convertible and the V303/1 hardtop car. Those bumpers must have been on back-order and the guys were waiting to see how big a hole they needed to cut. I don't think it was required to repaint the whole car at any point. The dark burgundy colour of the convertible is an interesting suggestion. This was proposed by Bob Gilmore who, in turn heard from Heinz Willi Lottermann the man behind the Bad Camberg vintage VW meetings. He personally knew many of the old Porsche company guys who were eye-witnesses to the events and the cars. The colour photos from the cornerstone ceremony indeed seem to show a black car, however if it was really dark red, the slight variation in hue may not show up in old photos that are now 85 years old. _________________ Check out my Facebook page: Volkswagen Prototypes. |
