To the house of the alternator/generator. Usually a small screw holds it. |

Yep, should be a screw hole further forward near the clamp, 5mm IIRC and not very long. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

Ok. Got it. Fixed it. Still no start.
Got it back from body shop. Ran fine.
Next day...won’t start. Found errant connection and thought it might be the problem.
Now I get to start the electric or fuel search.
Any help appreciated.
Yes...it does have gas in it.

Battery fully charged?
Using a test light, check for power to the #15 post on the coil. Light on, Yes, No? _________________ I have learned over the years.

They probably left the key on and fried the coil. _________________ Come on, It's not rocket science. KISS |

Agree, or points or similar.
Pretend the shop did leave the key on and work from there. _________________ When I set my timing, why do I flush, then take a pee? |

It ran fine when he got it back from the body shop so it’s unlikely they left the key on and damaged the ign. Start from square 1 - spark ? If yes then 2– fuel . Does fuel squirt down into carb throat when you work the throttle lever ?
1-spark- no. Check for 12v at positive terminal on ign coil.
Actually I would look at the fuse panel first. |

I pulled ign coil for testing. Between 15+ and 1, I got nuthin. I checked other secondaries and both were about the same… 8.xx.
I’m assuming that it’s a bad coil? |

Let's be clear what we're dealing with-- When you turn the key does the engine turn over but just not start? Or does the engine not turn over at all? _________________ I'm the humblest guy on this board.

Turns over...no start.
I can’t see into carb (bad lighting and my vision) but I smell gas. |

Ordered new coil and points.
Planned on doing this anyway, just not this soon.
Still...any ideas will help.
Thanks,

Stop just throwing parts at it. Start at the fuse block and find the fuse that supplies voltage to the coil, I think it is a black wire. If power there, go to the positive side of the coil(as you were already told). Power there? If yes, than learn how to test for spark from the coil. Or, just keep throwing parts at it indiscriminatly. |

Ok. Checked fuses. Good
Checked 15+ post. Power 5here. Good.
Checked spark at the coil. Spark there. Good.
Re-assembled everything to where it should be after putting on new connectors with a crimp and solder and heat shrink ...started right up. Good.
Ran for 5 or so minutes. Sounded real good and smooth. Good.
Died. Won’t start. Bad.
Let it sit for about 10 minutes...started up easily, sounded good, ran smooth.
Good.
Died. Bad...and getting frustrated.

How did you check for spark at the coil? Was it a nice fat blue spark or a dingy weak yellow spark? Did you test it with engine cold, or did you wait until the engine was completely warmed up before checking?
The thing about coils ( I am experiencing a very similar issue) is that the windings (and spark) may show good when the engine (and coil) are cold, but once they heat up may cause an internal fault in the windings. My 69 stalled out on me the other day after being driven for about 20 minutes on the interstate, towed it back home about an hour later it started up and ran just fine. Everyone said "coil/ condenser" so I measured the primary/ secondary winding resistances today with coil cold and they check out fine, but the problem is this does NOT mean there isn't something wrong with the coil. This kind of stuff can send you chasing your tail.
Although I just now read you ordered a new coil- was this last test with the new coil installed? _________________ I'm the humblest guy on this board.

Haven’t received the new coil yet.
Got a new condenser but not installed yet.
Checked cold and I think I remember a blue spark...
Guess I need to do more digging.
I’ll keep you all posted here
Thanks. |

Ok. Update.
I got tired of waiting for parts. I put everything back how it was. Dug into it again, but still didn’t work.
I finally got the condenser and points and installed them. Still no happiness.
I did find a loose connection on the coil. Re-crimped it and it fit tighter.
Hit the ignition...BINGO!! (Small happy dance...not a pretty sight)
Ran FANTASTIC for 5 minutes.....then...you guessed it. It died. No start.
My garage floor now has a new “dent” stomped into it. I was mad.
I gave up and slept on it. Next day I was looking forward to finding new disappointments.
I played around more and found another wire not where it was supposed to be. Fixed that, hit the ignition again. Viola! Again, it ran 5 minutes give or take and died.
Same wire checked again and was off again. Fixed again. Started again.
I went back, re did the crimp connector and soldered it and heat shrink tubing finish. It was still kinda loose, so I squeezed it tighter for solid fit.
Re-started and IT STILL RUNS TO THIS DAY!!
This was the offending #*%,*@!!
I have since received all my other parts and are awaiting installation.
(Remember I was going to do it eventually any way)
And they lived happily ever after. Till the next time.
The End |
