Seems well done with what looks to be a decent level of craftsmanship.
The potential buyer audience will be small. Rip that interior out and install a set of 356 buckets with a set of Fuchs and it would pop.
But.....
In conversations I have had with others that have sold on BAT, reserves are negotiated.
This seller is another dealer that has listed 39 vehicles.
I suspect the more business you do with BAT the more negotiation power you have.
I would be very, very surprised if BAT let the reserve be set at anywhere near $100k.
Whoever sold it to the dealer, based on the alleged investment, had to be deep underwater! A dealer trying to run a profit sure as hell wouldn't pay anywhere near that!
The spreadsheet cost printout is dubious at best.
The line item prices seem reasonable until you get to "Danny's Custom Auto"
$72,918.85
If that price is indeed correct then the only explanation IMO is "labor of love"
My prediction is a definite "Reserve Not Met"
Unless.....
Almost forgot. Headlights need to be shot out. |
$57k Sold

One of the longest bidding wars I've watched on a BAT Ghia. From other similar mods, I was thinking it would get bid up to 40K or so. Way too much in my opinion. Modified Ghias seem to draw a lot of interest but I don't think the high bidders are from the usual Samba Ghia crowd. _________________ Marc

The highest bid Ghias on BAT have been custom cars.
This one at least didn’t butcher you the body, just the interior…
I wonder too if people aren’t influenced by the high number on the receipts?
Anyway, I’m glad this sold super strong. _________________ Go Reds! Smash state!

Yeah, there were quite a few bidders in the 30-40 range and then the final two took it to the next level.
A lot of comments about how great the seats look. Can't say I agree, but to each their own. |

If you look at the winners' history they have bought a bunch of high dollar cars. _________________ "Depression is a malfunction of the instrument we use to determine reality.”

I also couldn't agree with a lot of comments that were made and it makes me wonder if those comments are written by people that know what they're talking about! _________________ Marc

The winner said it was bought to participate in the Copperstate 1000 Rally.
Seems spendy like the KG.
It will certainly fit in.

$29k no sale
I thought I posted the result. It's been a day
Anyhow, the high bidder reached out to try to make a deal with the seller who by inference is about $15-20k short of the reserve.
Sorry, seller is smoking crack if they think they are going to get $50K for a frankenghia. _________________ "Depression is a malfunction of the instrument we use to determine reality.”

$19k RNM
I thought it would have done much better.
It just never seemed to generate much enthusiasm.

The dealer/seller really didn't engage with comments very well though. Auctions that do well often have a seller who participates more and helps point out all the details of the car. This was a very nice car and it just wasn't discussed by the seller. The comments from the seller were sort of like he didn't care to even try. _________________ Marc

Hopefully some buyer will save this Ghia. IMO this car needs a lot of work and $. It’s a money pit. IMO, it’s much more cost effective to buy a running driver or restored car. _________________ 1956 Beetle Oval Rag top with Judson SC

Nice original car, but that bodywork is going to be a killer. They did a decent job on the nose, but these days those worm holes won’t fly and they botched the right rear fender repair, the rear apron is crooked. I’d also be wary of the luggage tray, my 70 had rotten pans and it earned out a corresponding rotten luggage tray which was a nightmare to replace.
I wouldn’t pay more than $7k for it and even then With the rising costs of parts and labor whoever buys it will be upside down when it’s done unless they are able to do most of the work themselves. _________________ Go Reds! Smash state!

Seller posted up some pix of the luggage tray area on the yellow convertible. As I thought, roached. It would take a strong commitment to want to repair that t least correctly. Coupled with the nose and rear damage I can’t imagine anyone wanting to save it, but hopefully they are our there. _________________ Go Reds! Smash state!

It will be interesting to see where the price will go on this one. There's lots of good here not the least of which is that this seller is totally honest and up front. It's no reserve so every bidder knows where they stand. Someone can buy this car fairly cheap and do just what is necessary to keep it on the road and enjoy driving a beautiful classic, or for someone who wants the enjoyment and pride of accomplishing their own restoration, this is a good foundation to start with. The car will come with a great history and documentation. It served it's owner well for 49 years and I hope it's new owner will love it as much as this lady did. Honestly, I think its fantastic that this lady kept this car on the road for 49 years. That's love! _________________ Marc
