I picked up a 1960 Indian Red beetle a few months ago and am just now getting around to working on it. I haven't sent off for the Birth Certificate yet but doing some math and using the Information in the Archives I believe it to have been made in the first week of January 1960. It's a really good looking color and I plan to go back with it. Someone told me they only used that color for 6 months, is that true? If so that's fewer production numbers than a Zwitter. I hesitate to call it rare, but definetly not common. Post pictures of your Indian Red Beetle. When I get off work I'll put up a couple of mine. Hopefully there would be enough interest to do a registry. |

I have had 'Wilma' for 3 years now and she is a lot of fun to drive. Check your color code sticker, mine says Indiana L451. I like that since I am from Indiana. Mine was produced in Nov. '59. She is not OG, but the mods are nice to have. '74 1600DP, front disc brakes, dual master cylinder, etc.
There is a site for a 1960 Indiana Red VW with 7,500 miles on oldbug.com. It is a great way to see an original car.
Let's see some pics.

It is a nice color, but not politically correct in name! _________________ Give peace a chance. No American war with Russia! |

It's most likely named after the red colors of India and not what you are thinking. Wonder why its called Indian Red when it's labeled Indiana. _________________ Frontier Finds

Many of the names the woke do not like are also not about what they think either. Funny anyway. _________________ Give peace a chance. No American war with Russia! |

I hope to find out more information. They are both 1960. One is a Semaphore and the other is a Semaphore Rag Top. _________________ Frontier Finds

Maybe the Germans were already "woke" back then and one said to the other, "Heyyy, better print that to say 'Indiana' as if it's the color of the soil in the Hoosier state, else we get in some trouble!" _________________ My name's Steve and it's pronounced "Bust 'em" (cuz people think I'm Tom) 😏 |

You could spend 2 seconds Google'ing it...
Quote: |
Why is Indian Red called Indian Red?
Indian Red is rich, opaque and deep red in colour. Its name derives from the red laterite soil found in India, where it was first identified by the Scottish scientist Francis Buchanan-Hamilton, and where iron ores exist in abundance. |
Anyways...
The VW color name is India, not Indian
I don't know if it's the case here with India vs. Indiana but VW often had different color names for different locations.
Sometimes it's a translation thing too. _________________ How to Post Photos
