Try searching the business listings on the Samba:

Didn't see anything in NW Indiana. Some in IL, depending on how far you want to travel. _________________ Tom

I'm in north central Illinois. Specifically, what engine work are you looking for? |

I have a 73 thing that is new to me. It has a pict 34 carb and a Pertronix distributor. After warming up there is a decent amount of hesitation when you accelerate. When its cold the thing runs awesome. I know this is a pretty common issue but there seems to be a lot of guess work when it comes to solutions in most of the forums because it sounds like there are multiple possible causes.
I have added some gum out to the gas, cleaned the injector screw thingy with carb cleaner (the screw on the side of the carb), sprayed carb to look for leaks and engine rev changes, and I just recently tried to "Choke" the carb. Watched a guy on here take the air cleaner off and put his hand over the top of the carb to try and use the internal vacuum to clean things out. No luck on all fronts.
Side note, I am brand new to VW engines so if any lingo is incorrect I apologize. Learning as I go. I wanted to make sure I add enough info to this post to help me get pointed in the correct direction. |

I assume the injector screw thingy you refer to is the mixture screw on the carb. After you cleaned it, did you reinstall with the same setting as before? To do that you would have had to turn the screw clockwise until it bottomed out counting the number of turns. Then when you reinstall, you bottom the screw & then back off the same number of turns. |

Howdy ...
So Kool you have a Type181 ... !
Could be your choke isn't adjusted rite.
Loosen the 3 screws holding the choke spring when cold. Rotate circular part until the flap is about just less than 1/8" from wall. Tighten 3 screws. Warm up engine noting how long it takes the choke to fully open. The bimetal choke spring wears out & you mite not be able to rely on hash marks. About 3-5 minutes is ok.
The stepped fast idle cam could be off.
When cold rotate cam to lowest position. Adjust fast idle cam screw so it JUST TOUCHES the cam plus a half turn. Leave this adjustment alone from now on.
The small lower screw on carb is amount of fuel. Normal setting is about 2-4 turns out from bottom.
The large screw above is air/fuel. This could need 4 to 6 turns out from bottom. Standard air/fuel ratio is about 14:1. This large screw has an O-ring that can leak, fouling any attempt at tuning. ANY vacuum leak can mess this up.
You said Pertronix distributor but does it have a vacuum can ?
An 009 distributor (mechanical only advance) does not play nice with the PICT3-4 carburetor.
Hesitation can also come from your dwell being off (point gap), low coil output, or a failing condenser.
Valves, points, choke, carburetor adjustments, input/output coil voltage, & rpm all need to be close to optimal settings to have a good running engine and a nice driving experience. These ACVW engines can be finicky & help to invent new curse words.
Please post photos of your engine set up - thanks.
Do you have a good fixit manual ?
Look up Rob and Dave's on Goo-Goo, good info.
You got this ... stay safe
