|
|
We have a 1999 EuroVan Camper. Many years ago, the protector for one of the pop top hinges fell off. I'm referring to the vinyl protector that goes between the hinge and the canvas.
Hinge protector example (not ours):
It seemed like the adhesive just wore out. At the time, I tried pushing the protector back on, but it wouldn't stick. When I took the protector out, there was sticky residue on the top and bottom of the protector where it attached to the top and bottom hinge mounts. It's still sticky today.
The protector I need to reattach:
I'm looking for recommendations for how to reattach the protector. I want it to really stick and not fall off again.
* Do you know how they were originally attached?
* What liquid or tape adhesives would work well to attach the vinyl to metal?
* What methods would you suggest for fixing this?
Note: When the pop top is open, the two elastic straps on the protector pull tight so there's tension where the protector is mounted to the hinge brackets. The adhesive needs to be strong enough to handle that.
Thank you in advance for your help.

Well today I learned the pop-top hinges originally had a protective piece between the hinge and the fabric top. My pop-top doesn't have those so I assume a previous owner removed them.
For your solution if I was you I'd clean the sticky residue off with Goo-Gone or some other good cleaning solution, then use a 3M double-sided adhesive tape to reattach the protectors to the hinges.
And now knowing these protectors exist, I'll see if I can sew a suitable replacement for my missing protectors, and attach them to the hinges in my van. |

Hi RiversToTheSea,
I apologize for my delayed reply. Thank you for your reply and ideas.
I wondered about a strong double-stick tape. Are you thinking about the type that is a roll of thin foam? You unroll and cut off the amount you need. Unrolling it exposes adhesive on one side. You stick that to one of the surfaces. You then peel off the protective paper to expose the adhesive on the other side, then attach what you want to it.
Have you used that type of double-stick tape for applications like this before? Could you provide a couple links that show what you're thinking about?
Thank you again for your ideas. You may have "unstuck" me so I can move forward with this repair.
