I read on this forum that a 1958 Beetle Ragtop has no water drain tubes. Is that correct? There are no tubes on this one I am restoring and to make some would be in the way of the headliner big time! Thanks for replies in advance! |
Only the metal sunroof cars had drain tubes. Fabric sunroof cars have none. _________________ 1960 Ragtop w/Semaphores "Inga" |

Thanks for the reply! No wonder I couldn't find any drain tube kits! This surely will be my last restoration at 79! Man! Does it get tough at my age! I couldn't do without the Samba members to answer questions about the really old stuff! |

I found this thread to be very helpful. I'm restoring a 1967 sunroof bug and was aghast that the front drains just seemed to piddle into the A-pillars. That did not end well!
I've worked on my sunroof 1982 Vanagon and it had steel terminals exiting the rocker panels front and rear, as I remember. And I've studied early Porsche 911's and 912's and they also had steel openings.
Has anyone recently bought new tubing to fit this application? Was back in the 90's when I bought this car I was able to buy ONE NOS factory drain hose. It seems like it is pretty small, perhaps 10mm nylon with the terminals swaged out bigger, perhaps 12mm?
I know one can now buy kits of nylon(?) tubing to replace evaporative emission tubing and also fuel lines and I think they have the tools to stretch it in the kits. _________________ Al Brase

This is what Volvo has used on their sunroof for years. ~9mm ID x ~12.5mm OD. It's very flexble and the ends can be easily streched over the drain fittings by hand....
Being Volvo has used the same OE vendors as VW for decades-either Golde or Webasto, I would imagine they all use the same size. A two meter lenght is about $14 USD from FCP Euro #31371480.

I have a small cut-off if someone wants to try it for size before they buy it, yours for the cost of shipping only. _________________ -Bruce

I guess my memory is a little foggy after this is laying in storage for 20 years?
In fact I BOUGHT 2 NOS drain pipes back in the 1990's when they were still available. AND THEY ARE DIFFERENT MATERIALS. One translucent like surgical tubing with a clear coupling shrunk on, the other very dark colored, brown or black, with swaged end, like the originals.
As i delve into this more, i'll post some pictures. My drains are all there. I'm gonna try to re-route the fronts. I'll make sure they are all clear before proceeding to cover anything. _________________ Al Brase
