I know the recommendation is to run tubes when running radials on 5 lug wheels with no interior hump to maintain the tire seal during certain spirited driving. However, has anyone actually had a radial lose the rim seal on these older wheels? I am replacing 20 year old radials on a recent purchased 67 beetle and now I am second guessing this since my wheels are stock 67 5 lug wheels without the hump. I am also planning to install 165/80 R15 on the stock 4” rims, which is the same size I am replacing.

Keep your tires properly inflated and you'll be fine

My '63 has its original 5-lugs with tubeless radials. No issues.

I've never had a problem and I used to hammer the corners in my old Notchback, to the point the oil light came on a few times from the oil going all to one side. Very Happy

I've never had a problem with the lack of bead lock on older rims. I've never had a tire shop question installing radial tires on those older wheels either.

I would say tire quality is more a concern.

I had a cheap tire pop off a j-lock rim once, so, clearly no system is foolproof.

I have michelins on old bus rims now, not worried at all.
