The canister in the trunk of my '73 has a nipple in the front that was plugged off by the PO. I want to put the hose back on it and route it properly - where does it go from there? _________________ Thanx, DLT

|
|
I checked the forums, parts list, and searched the part number, but can't find the size of the small evaporative hoses that go to and from the canister. The rest of that system is fine, and I don't want to buy the entire $80 kit from ThingShop. My next step would be to take the canister into Autozone and just try different hoses.
Also, any tips on repacking the canister? Ive seen videos, but nothing specifically on the Thing canister. |

The Thing Shop lists it as 3.5 mm, or 1/8" approximate. Also realized it is an expansion canister, not a carbon unit! Have no idea where the carbon unit came from in my garage. |

Carbon unit (filter) sits under the passenger rear wheel well. _________________ Walküre Restoration Thread: https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=737492 |

Please excuse me, I inherited a "all numbers matching" '74 Thing (so I am told) through Marriage and I am slowly going through it to make sure everything is fit for driving.
I was always smelling gas so I have been making sure everything is restored to original (as can be) and safe as possible.
The only stuff I have left is the fuel line itself and this venting line from the EXPANSION CHAMBER to the ACTIVATED CHARCOAL CONTAINER.
Does anyone know the correct routing?
Is there a steel line or just hose all the way back between the EXPANSION CHAMBER to the ACTIVATED CHARCOAL CONTAINER?
I have the EXPANSION CHAMBER with the hose going through the body but only hangs down at that point.
I found the ACTIVATED CHARCOAL CONTAINER but no hose connected to it.
If anyone has pictures that would be most helpful.
Thank you in advance. |

There’s a metal line (much like a brake line) that runs down the side of the car. It exits out of one of the wheel wells (can’t remember which side.) I searched through my pictures because I know I took photos of it, but this is the only one I could find at the moment. The yellow arrow points to the line itself, and the red arrow points to one of the brackets. There are several brackets, and if I remember correctly, they bolt to the floor pan using the floor to body bolts, but I could be wrong about that.
EDIT: After writing this I am now second guessing myself. There are two charcoal canisters, one in front of the engine and one under the hood, and now I can’t remember why there is a line running front to back. Someone else will surely chime in.

Thank you I found it on the right side. It was disconnected (of course) and bent up so I missed it the first time. |

The metal line runs under the right side rocker. The canister in the front is just a hollow can, it's an expansion chamber essentially for the tank vapours to gather. The one in the right rear wheel well is filled with charcoal. The idea is vapours from the tank can collect in the front can then be sucked to the rear and filtered, then into the intake and get burned. Not sure how well an old system can work but if all the lines are connected and in good shape it should still work OK. _________________ SL |
