I'm Stripping a Super Beetle steering box for a rebuild. Im not sure how to remove the worm spindle. Am I supposed to tap the end of the worm spindle with a soft mallet on the splined end and push it out the other side? The other side is capped with a plastic/rubber cap. I don't want to damage this as I have yet to see a replacement available.
I did come across this image where the first picture shows that I'm on the right track
Is it a matter of tapping the whole worm spindle assembly bearings and all out one side? I cant see any circlips or any thing like that holding the assembly in place.
I have read this thread a few times but its more orientated around earlier beetle beam end steering box's

Thanks Starbucket. I probably should have mentioned that I have the Bentley manual. It refers to checking and adjusting the steering box but not really disassembly. Diagrams show that the only way out for the spindle is out the rear end. I just don't want to whack the thing with a hammer without really knowing if it's the right way then risk damaging the rubber plug on the rear side or destroy the steering box altogether. |

I’m surprised you have a rubber plug and not a worm adjuster and locknut. _________________ 1971 1302LS Convertible (RHD) owned since '74

Sooo this arrived in the mail today!
It has shed a little more light on my situation. I was looking at new seals for my steering box the other day and the website specified that the seals we're from either a German or non-German built steering box. My super is an Australian built bug so I'm guessing its a German super beetle steering box but I could be completely wrong here?
bnam I do have a worm adjuster and lock nut but its on the splined end of the worm spindle. You can see the thread in the housing in the first pic I posted. There is a seal there and the worm spindle passes through it. Maybe this is the difference between the German and non-German steering boxes.
Unlike the steering box in the book I just received. Hence the rubber bung in the back end.
Different but the same I guess
At the end of the day the worm spindle looks like it needs to come out the rubber bung end. I'll procrastinate a few more days, do some more reading and hopefully come up with the courage to start trying to work it out with some gentle blows. |

The difference is because you have a RHD steering box. The RHD steering box uses the same case as the LHD (part number 113 415 111A) - but since it is mounted on the opposite inner fender, it is reversed and the adjuster/locknut faces the steering wheel side. My car is probably the same. _________________ 1971 1302LS Convertible (RHD) owned since '74
