Incidentally my Tiguan boots on the lifted Syncro 19.5” (that are mashing hard) are still fine at ~18k miles. 18k is a guess.

CV angle on 19.5” on Syncro =18.5” on 2wd

RIP Tiguan boot. Only lasted 6500 miles. 🤬

Looks like I’m gonna have to pull a used EMPI out of the stash to fix this today. The other 3 look fine and I’ll keep running them till they fail.

Thanks for the feed back, were they OEM VW or some other brand?

OEM

Part #KO407283G

Rebuilt that CV and put a used EMPI boot I had on for now. I’ll probably buy another OEM one and install it when the EMPI fails.

The other 3 OEM ones still look brand new. I wonder why this one failed. 🤷‍♂️

I ordered a new boot from FCP. Once it arrives I can send back the broken one and submit for a refund. I will report what happens with the refund.

Ok here comes theSamba forensics team. Shocked
‘71 Bus axle angle could be different from a Vanagon.

Do you mind cleaning it up and look at the break
to see if theres “wear” from touching the axle on the inside?
(I doubt it would touch there).
Or if you can do closeup pics, post a closeup of the break?
Also can you post a pic of the other outer boot too (the survivor)?

And I wonder how the axle - to - fender height of a ‘71 Bus compares to a Vanagon?

Figured I'd chime in. Read through all this a couple weeks ago when I found my two and a half year old Rockford boots starting to tear open and sling grease. Purchased four boots from the local VAG dealer, part number 2Q0498202. Boots that came out of the box said 1K0498201 right on them. Seem to be higher quality than everything else. I'm a big fan of thermo-plastic boots.

Currently my odometer is at 16,024 miles. 944 GKN joints. Ride height is at 43 to 43.5 cm not loaded. If I'm doing a road trip it's normally loaded. Did a bunch of suspension work about a year ago, and had the alignment performed with the vehicle loaded up, ride height at 41 cm. '82 Westy with a Subaru EJ22. I inspect my van fairly regularly including driveshafts, and will provide updates as necessary. Hoping I can get at least 8 to 10 years out of these. Super glad that I checked on here, and also glad someone took the time to experiment, and share information. I took pictures, but not sure how needed they are for this post. It looks just like the others posted before me. If someone asks for mine, I'll share.

I have been following this thread for a couple years now. After burning through 8 rockford boots in 3 years, I have decided to give this a try Smile

I purchased the vag boots from FCP the other day. $285 for 4 boots after tax. Free shipping though.

My 89’ Carat currently has 22,250 miles on the odometer. I often have 5-7 people + camping gear, or towing a trailer, so I put what I believe are standard vanagon springs in the rear as opposed to the lowered Carat springs. Im measuring the ride height at 16-5/16 from the fender to the center of the axle when unloaded.

As some people have already noted, reinstalling the axles with these boots is a breeze. For the first time, I felt confident enough in the star engagement to feel like I could use my cordless drill to snug up the bolts without fear of the largest boot rib pushing the star out, stripping it,, or having the socket tear the boot. Not sure if that is worth nearly $300, but to me it seemed to cut the installation time in half. There was also almost no cursing;)

Thank you to everyone that has started this work before me. I will keep the group updated on my progress.

I've been installing a few sets of the GKN boots on non-lifted vans to try them out at the shop, they've been blowing left and right recently,. They're too stiff to accommodate the axle angle that's still greater than a Tiguan car.
As a result the shaft wears through the boot.

They are borderline ok on a factory lowered van like the Carat (Multivan in Europe) (minus 30 or35mm I forgot)

See how they are fighting to go back to straight shape? This one is on a stock basic Syncro, pretty much the same angle as a regular van since the transmission is a hair lower . Same has been observed on 2WD vans

Then this happens, see how the shaft is shiny where it contacts the inner part of the boot?
