Something I haven't seen much mention about here is adjusting the valves on our ej 2.5 engines. I have an 07 EJ 2.5 in my 87 syncro. I had both heads fully rebuilt recently. It's a reputable shop and I said to rebuild anything necessary on the heads. Why? Burnt exhaust valve likely due to not adjusting it.? Honestly I thought there was a hydraulic cap on the valve tip from something I'd read on the interweb. I know that to be wrong now.
I asked the shop owner if I needed to adjust them soon, he said no. Thoughts?

The twin cam EJ Subaru motors use shims to adjust valve clearance. I have seen the turbo motors burn exhaust valves from lack of clearance. The single cam heads use adjuster screws. Checking the lash occasionally on any solid tappet engine is a very good idea. If in spec just change the gaskets and button her up. If your twin cam needs adjustment it is a real pain.

Yes thank you. Not hard to adjust. The worst part is the small car engine hanger and exhaust is in the way. My main question is adjusting them soon after a head rebuild.

On my 2002 EJ25 I check them every few years. Usually a couple need adjusting.

I have the (unverified) belief that newly rebuilt valves will benefit from an early check/adjustment due to the seating of the valves in the seat.

....at least that's what I'll be doing with my rebuilt heads on a new OEM shortblock.

Now the questions is - what mileage this early check/adjustment will be.
