Hello All,
My '68 bug runs great, shifts fine most of the time. As the temps rise here in the northeast and I drive it for longer periods, the shifting starts to grind when it has been run for a straight 30-60min. I am trying to double clutch, and that helps some. Curious what your thoughts are for what would be causing this. Any ideas?? |

When was the last time you changed the gear oil?
First thing to check is the shift rod coupler under the rear seat and the bushing in the tunnel under the shifter. If those are good check the transaxle mounts. _________________ 2017 Street Comp Champion - Thunder Valley Raceway Park - Noble, OK

things to check:
When it starts to do this and you come to a stop, does it still move forward in gear with the clutch pedal pushed? (no brakes applied)
transmission fluid, usually 90w gear oil, might as well change it and refill on level ground until it stops draining out of the fill hole.
bowden tube, check that it is a rigid tube with a downward bend toward the bottom. Sometimes the tube will flex too much and cause enough change to minimize effectiveness of cable movement-which is less than 1". It is between the chassis exit and the transmission
Check your cable, it could be old and have some strands broken, while heat will not affect it, it could just be stretching.
Check that transaxle mounts are tight and not cracked, heat may soften up the pads which may allow the transaxle to move slightly, and when you step on the clutch pedal it could be pulling the transaxle off it's center. _________________ '56 pan Dune Buggy since '69

My '02 Jetta is doing this too at 470K km on the clock. 1st and 2nd are the worst of course. It's just normal wear on the synchro rings. I just give it more time and a light touch on the shifts for now. I could drop the oil and put heavier oil back in, that would hold it off for another year or so but in all truth it just needs some new parts. _________________ We had the stone age, the bronze age, the industrial age and now we are in the age of mass deception and mind control for corporate profit. Did a complete service when purchased 2 months ago including a gear oil drain/fill and new boots. Also replaced the coupler since it was very sloppy. Havn't checked the mounts, will do that asap as well as couple of other things suggested. Thanks |
