Put a bunch of pics in the gallery of my 66 standard micro. Original owner passed away and I was able to purchase it about 10 years ago. 26K miles with book documenting every gas fillup....Original paint.
It is interesting that the parts that were painted by subcontractors (window frames, bumpers, wheels) show surface rust, but the main body painted by VW doesn't.
It is pretty much a reference as to how they were built in '66. |

Truly amazing, such an original low milage bus! As you said, it's a reference for the form in which they left the factory at VW.
The surface rust is mostly rust that creeps through the paint. You probably can remove most of it with a good CLR treatment. |

Wow, just a wonderful example of an original Bus. I remember one like this outside Medford, Oregon back in '99-2000, sitting in an old guys yard, not for sale.
Here is my old Sea Blue Deluxe, back in 2010

Thanks - I’ll try CLR on a small spot and see if it looks better.
I think the previous owner had put some kind of plastic inside on the side windows to keep out the sun. This is why the interior looks new. |

Does the bus smell as new as it looks? Isn't that^^^ stuff done by VW? |

Smells great! :-)
I'm not sure, but I think VW stamped the body and main panels, welded them together, painted and then finished assembling the using supplier outsourced window, bumper, wheel assemblies. I'm sure someone on thesamba can tell us if my theory is correct... |

Hot Dog!!!!
That is a reference bus. People should be asking you for pics of various parts that are clean and as original as they come .

Still a work in progress, but my ‘65 Deluxe just got back on the road after being parked since the mid-80s. I spent about 700 hours over 10 months basically putting a bare shell back together. Luckily, it was a pretty clean Texas Bus to start with.
1200 miles in the past 6 weeks, with a bunch more trips planned throughout the summer.

This thread is seriously making me reconsider the color choice for my 67. I'd initially wanted to paint it sea blue, but the only other split bus that consistently shows up at local events is that color and I don't want to bite his style. I'd been thinking of Turchese from the Lambretta DL/GP, but damn sea blue just looks so good. _________________ 1973 Superbeetle: 1st car, owned since age 12.
