Long-time reader here! Finally decided to make an account and ask a question. We refinished an old 1974 bus and had no issues with the z-bed hinges.. until there were problems! It will go flat into a bed but when trying to convert it back into a bench, it won't go down all the way - it's like the seat is stuck on 45 degrees.

I started looking at the hinges more closely trying to figure out what's wrong with it. I'm thinking the metal got mashed out of shape... there might have been a bit of mashing at one point. :$

I took picture of both sides and I'm guessing the one on the left is the "normal" and the other one is the one that needs some TLC. Can anyone take a picture of their hinge so I can confirm that's the issue?

Furthermore, any ideas on how to fix it without replacing the hinge? I tried to bend it back with pliers but because of the spring, it just moves down without changing the shape of the metal piece.

I assume good hinge

You are correct that the top pic is what the “ keeper” is supposed to look like. The keeper in the lower is in bad shape. I would take pics of mine and send to you , but my bus is 100 miles away…. But hopefully back this weekend. I also might have some pics of when I restored mine a couple of years ago, and have on a flash drive. In the interim, contact Ken Madsen at the Bus co ( advertises on the Samba) and see if he has a used rear seat hinge available. Bob
