Why do I want to keep my manual? |
I've owned several manual Vanagons and several automatic Vanagons. I personally prefer the automatic. I can't think of any reason to prefer a manual except the better fuel economy. |
I have one of each and love them both. The difference in fuel economy is ridiculously huge. The automatic just sucks down the gas |

I went from a manual to an auto. It is so much better for me as I have shoulder and knee problems. Also the driving experience is great as a touring vehicle. Fuel consumption is up by about 10% for me. Assuming equal reliability, I would not go back to manual even if my shoulders and knees were better. _________________ '86 Westfalia 2.0L Zetec

I have an automatic equipped '87 Westy and seven other models of older manual transaxle vintage VWs. I love that automatic trans Vanagon! Never owned a manual Vanagon, but my auto Vanagon gets around 18mpg and I can't imagine that the manual is that much better?
Its a big, heavy vehicle and the automatic makes touring very smooth and comfortable. Don't get me wrong, I like manual trans in my other lighter Buses Beetles and Ghia. The automatic also shifts crisply and is not jerky at all. "Try it, you'll like it!"

fuel economy of the Automatic is largely dependent on road speed (and load ie. tires/mtns) but since they are geared lower and only have 3 speeds w/o a lockup converter they are most efficient under 65mph.
we can hit ~18mpg in our Automatic at blue highway speeds..
but at turnpike speeds it's 15mpg. and I'm NOT doing 65 or less on the turnpike. _________________
