Been too busy.
Camping tomorrow so no changes in plan for this weekend either. But, we will be taking the Super. |
Make sure to take pics of the loaded car. You know where to place them.
My camping plans got sidelined by the predicted shit weather overnight tonight and wet racing conditions tomorrow.
But I'll at least show up for the race. Who knows if it will be a rain out. _________________ I have learned over the years.

Swapped my idle jets on Friday, found a tiny ratchet in my hand-me-down tool pile that was perfect for getting to the idles without pulling the carbs. I just pulled the air cleaners and was able to reach in. Tight fit but not bad at all. Went from 50 to 47.
Readjusted the idle and went for a drive. Definitely more crisp feeling. From there I popped out the bus SVDA, and popped in the 040 cast iron. Readjusted the timing to 30 all in, readjusted the idle, and gave it some revs with the hose connected. As installed the vac advance only blipped the timing a couple degrees. I opened the hex on the can, and after a couple tries I was able to get the vac advance to pull the timing in 10 additional degrees. I ended up adjusting the can out 2.5 turns from how it was previously set for my kadrons. The results seem good so far- I have a rock steady idle with about ~13° initial. Took it for a rip up and down the freeway and a bit through town, and the part throttle difference is pretty darn nice! The funny slow spot from 2500-3000RPM I had at light throttle pickup is gone.
Smooth response, and the advance curve may be archaic but the vacuum advance should make it a worthwhile distributor to run. Still need to get around to setting up the TCS-1 but for an hour's work I'm happy so far. Initial driving from a sixty mile freeway trip shows it is using a bit less fuel, but I won't know until I spend more freeway miles in it.
Engine is filthy from not driving it much lately _________________ 73 super beetle thread http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=649622 Back on the Road!

I've found the 47's to be right for me too. I still do have a similar 'funny slow spot'. I may need to try a carb with vacuum advance. Not sure I want to go down the BB rabbit hole. _________________ 74 Super

Small update- decided to finally ditch the Bosch blue, and with amazon points in-hand I saw a good deal on a Ford TFI type coil pop up on Amazon. Also grabbed the wiring harness to make things a bit cleaner. Next time I'm at the junkyard I'll grab an OEM coil if I can find one.
Spectra C-502 coil, $12.21-
https://a.co/d/8qaDT3q
Top Street Performance Wiring Harness, $7.88
https://a.co/d/5kaKk6g
I already had some short sections of suitable ignition wires that already had the HEI type 90 degree terminal end for the coil, so I simply trimmed it and crimped on a new terminal and slipped on a boot for the Bosch type center coil post connection.
Since these coils are meant to be mounted to a bracket specific to the application they were originally installed in, I got some scrap 1/8" thick aluminum, bent it in my bench vise, drilled a few mounting holes to keep my options open later, and hit it with some Rustoleum Hammertone paint to hide the hammer marks, and because it looks neat.
Then took it to the car, and mounted it to a couple existing holes in the firewall, right over the VW diagnostics port location.
I'm using the Bosch coil as a tie-down spot for now, just to be safe until this thing proves itself reliable. It'll take less than a minute to swap back to the blue coil if something fails- all I need to do is throw the coli lead back on, and switch the negative coil terminal lead from the TFI coil to the Bosch coil.
How's it run? Well, i barely touched the key and it fired right up. Idle was lumpy as usual for a cold start, but cleared up very quickly. Took it around the block and there is a noticeable improvement over the Bosch coil off the line and the idle went up 200 RPM after it had a few minutes to warm up.
I'm running 1/2" DP6EA-9 spark plugs, pregapped (and verified) at .035" and I knew the Bosch blue was not ideal, but with my 9-1 static compression and dual carbs without chokes it makes a welcome change to a cold start.
My next step is likely to relocate the TFI coil/module inside the car, behind the back seat with the rest of my wiring, and get it prepped to switch over to CDI later on. I really want to clean up the engine bay and make it look less messy and janky. _________________ 73 super beetle thread http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=649622 Back on the Road!

Glad to hear that coil worked out for you!
One of these days, we really have to get together, with being so close and all! I have a group guys out in Brentwood/Oakley I usually run around with. _________________ 71' Super Convertible (Orange)

Now that I have a distributor with vac advance (123 Tune+ BT), I've decided to try and go after a lean cruise tune. For this, I will try 45 idle jets. I've found the 47's are suited to mech advance only and achieve AFR in the 13's for light throttle. Something you may wish to consider once you get your Daytona setup going. _________________ 74 Super

Interesting. Is that with dialing back the accelerator pumps to make sure they aren't contributing to the readings? |
Yup. That's with the nuts backed out as far as they will go without coming off, and without the main stacks in. _________________ 74 Super
