Hello there,
Recently ive start my 1970 VW and notice that strange noise coming from behind the fan housing. When the engine heats up, we ear it less or if the engine rev a bit at 1500 - 2000 rpm
The only Time we hear that is when the engine is cold or running low in idle.
Many people that ive speak too never ear it before so i dont know what could it be

Logically it sounds like the thermostat controlled dampers inside the fan shroud. When engine heats up the dampers open. Is it a rattling sound? |

It doesnt rattle like (knocking). It mostly sound like friction, ive also notice that when i put my hand on the shifter, you can barely feel the sensation of friction.
Some say it might be the clutch bearing or the transmission being damaged. But the thing is, it shift perfectly, goes to 100 - 110 km/h (60-70 MPH) with out hesitation and only does that at cold |

Take a good look at that area. A small mirror and a flashlight are your good friends! _________________ Jimbo

This might be a longshot but could be the cooling fan mount plate in the doghouse. Mine did the same thing until it finally just let go completely, didn't think I'd make it home. _________________ "Knowledge is Good" - Faber College |

Also check belt tension....too much can tilt alternator/generator and cause fan to rub doghouse. |

Hard to describe but was kind of a scraping racket that came and went and then finally wouldn't go away. _________________ "Knowledge is Good" - Faber College |
