All- the engine in my 72 bus has a strange code and I'd like to understand what year it's from. The code is the VW Recycled code, followed by the letter "C" followed by 990926. That's it. There's no "X" at the end, and the only letter at the beginning is "C". Here's the picture.

How do I determine what year/size engine this is?

Thanks!
...Alex

Take it apart and measure the piston diameter and stroke. Even if you were able to determine what the engine size was when it left the VW rebuilding shop, that still may not be what it is today.

A borescope down the spark plug hole might let you to get a good enough view of the piston top and head to let you take a guess at their size from their shape, but it still would not be definitive.

Since it’s rebuilt, it could have been a 914 engine that was stamped in the back of the case so you could check there. Or it could be a new case that was used so it didn’t have a number originally. Either way, as Wildthings said, you’d have to tear down to definitively determine size.

Usually those rebuilds are compatible with a variety of models, that one likely works in all vehicles that used a C series engine.

Have a look at the side of the sump, sometimes displacement and other oddities are stamped there. But as already mentioned how it was when it left that shop doesn't mean it hasn't been altered since then.
