My Wife and I are looking for an inexpensive "fun" car.

I've stumbled upon a 2006 New Beetle Convertible.
2.5 engine
Automatic trans
130,000 miles

It has a few issues that are well within my skill level to fix.
Some paint scrapes, top operation

I am wondering more about reliability, known issues, what to expect.

I've done some online searching, overall..... engine is good, transmission? Maybe not so good?
Any real world advice?

Thanks!
Dave

Maintenance is key!! Make sure the transmission has had proper fluid services.

The 2.5 engine is good. Check for any maintenance records!!

We had an 07 beetle convertible for about 7 years. My wife found it with 70k on it in 2015, and we sold it to Carmax last year with 130k on it. The 5 cylinder makes a wonderful sound over 4k, and the car as a whole was pretty nice to drive. Reliability was good. I did very little to it that was not regular maintenance or wear and tear. Only failures were an air bag module ($500) and the vacuum pump - until the transmission started to go. Slipping, banging upshifts and downshifts. Valve body did not solve the issue, and as a fourth car, the decision was made to let it go. Fluid changes might have saved the transmission, don't neglect the maintenance! Timing chain guides were also an issue in early 2.5s, but that may have been blown out of proportion - you don't see much reference to it online anymore.

Thanks for the advice!

Yesterday I went and looked at and drove this 06 Beetle.

It drives strong.... the auto trans shifts good with no slippage or hard shifts.

The owner just had it inspected and serviced, including new tires only weeks before she caught a deer.

The damage is mainly broken plastic. The hood isn't bent nor is the metal under the front bumper.

The biggest down side is a broken glove box latch and the interior needs a good cleaning.
No stale smoke smell inside.

The top is aging but it has a few years in it still.

I looked at the rust hot spots I've read about, rocker panels and rear fenders to quarter panels. It all seems to be solid.

I ordered the Bentley last night.

Looks pretty good! Did you purchase it?

Looks like an easy repair.

https://humblemechanic.com/replacing-vw-2-5l-vacuum-pump-the-easy-way/

vacuum pump the easy way. As you were told, they don't fail-they leak. I replaced it because I did not know you could just reseal it. I would probably just replace it again though, it wasn't that much money.

FCP Euro out of Connecticut is where I buy most of the parts for my newer Euro stuff. Most of what they sell are OE manufacturers or OEM parts. They list the quality for each part.

Yup. Great website. The automatics thru 2010 don't have a good reputation, but I have yet to run into a person I know who had a bad experience.

All VW five-cylinder engines have a great reputation. I haven't driven one in a NB convertible, but I have in a NB sedan. I think it's a great all-situation engine (not including racing), and much better than the 2.0 four-cylinder it replaced.

I think those years of verts are under the radar, too, at the moment. Repairs and cosmetics are much tamer on the wallet than my Turbo S (which I love to the point I bought it back after selling it two years prior). I think you made a smart purchase. Well done.

I scored a 180 HP 5 speed convertible back in 2003 when I won the lottery the second time. Most only came with the 150 HP version I believe

Life is good
