I plan to install a right-side rear-view mirror on my 1974 1.8 liter. Searching the web, I learned (on the Pelican Parts Tech Article site) that the original purpose-made right-side, convex rearview mirror seems to be long-extinct (no longer available from Porsche) but that an ordinary left-side mirror may be reversed and used on the right.
Several techniques for doing this offer advice. One suggests that, since the two nuts for securing the attachment screws are already welded in place under the upper right door skin, one can simply remove the right side inner door panel and tap upwards through the pre-positioned nuts (using progressively larger drills, but carefully, so as to not drill-out the nut threads).
The other technique suggests precisely measuring the location of the two left-side mirror screw holes, next tracing their measurement on the right door in the same position as on the left (then, drilling out the holes, again being careful to not damage the welded-in-place nut threads under the door skin). Sounds simple and because 'Germans are Germans', the position of the right-side mirror is very likely EXACTLY congruent to the left-side mirror's position. This approach eliminates having to remove the right-side inner door panel, saving much work). BUT IS IT REALLY THAT SIMPLE AND FAIL-PROOF?
Anyone have some key insights to share on this matter? Thanks. _________________ 1973 Standard Beetle, 1974 VW/Porsche 914-4, 1.8 liter
