I need some help identifying an engine.
On the case, there are some raised numbers that are S1 12 004 101 102a.
On the top of the case where the oil filler mounts are some more numbers and letters that are stamped into the case.
They are GD 021322
I found some conflicting information about these two sets of numbers.
One chart from volksbolts.com is saying I have a 1976-77 2.0l T2 engine.
When I check the case part numbers (004 101 102a) they come back saying it is a Porsche 1.7l engine.
I want to rebuild this engine, but I need to know what it is, so I can order parts.
Thanks for any help. |

1.7 or the 2.0?
I am just confused as to why it has two conflicting sets of numbers stamped on it. |

it is not a 2.0 914 engine case, probably like previously stated a 76 and up bus engine. 914 2.0 case in 75 76 would start GC |

I will have to check my parts books but the "raised" numbers with the 004 are casting numbers. The cases are pretty much all the same until some of the late bus with hydraulic lifters. The raised 004 numbers are just case casting part #s.
The important number that states what its application was is the STAMPED number near the oil filler or on the diagonal casting plate near the bell housing and number 3 cylinder.
Having a GD prefix and having the stamped number near the oil filler pretty much says that it started life as a 2.0L in a bus.
But most importantly...check the heads. Does it have the right part number and does it have 3 intake manifold studs instead of 4?
It may BE a 2.0 914 engine that was rebuilt on a 2m0 bus case. Ray |
