Hey Ray,
It depends on where it was leaking from. If he unscrews it and fluid comes out of the transmission side that is normal. That is what I understood from Kirk. If it is leaking through the hose nipple port then it is a bad diaphram.

Ah!...ye...forgot the previous post. He was probably talking about just screwing the valve into the transmission.
I just looked in the 411/412 parts book and what looks like a locknut on the outside at a glance is actually a sealing ring. Ray |

A sealing ring for sure but not a locknut. Mine never had a locknut. There is a nut that is part of the body of the modulator and it takes a very slim wrench head to slip in there. In the past is was common practice to use channel lock pliers on the middle seam to unscrew it. Not the best thing to do but we did it…lol. I’m sure you did it too, in a pinch.

Yes!.....that's where my brain got the locknut idea! It's been so long since I have actually OWNED one of these automatics!
I had my first 411 in high school with an automatic. Went through a couple of transmissions over a few years. Pulling the modulator off of mine to put on the replacement transmission
I actually used a "strap wrench" and thought I was cool!
Then my dad digs in his tool cabinet and produces a wrench that was probably his dad's wrench ....that was super thin on the open end and had a flex head socket on the other and it fit right on. The correct tool!
I will have to see if that is still in his tool box.

Cool story. A strap wrench would work really good and be gentler on the body.
It is neat that both of us still have some of our dad’s tools. I use his stuff all the time that I inherited. He was a machinist so alot of measuring old school micrometers etc…. I still like using his old stuff because you actually have to read the scales. Alot of people nowdays have no idea. The old dial indicator I stiil use to check crankshaft/flywheel end play. I have no idea what is even used today. Sometimes I live in a world of denial.

I just picked up an extra wrench cheap from a swap meet, and grind it down until it is thin enough. I've seen some modulators that were really tight, and don't feel comfortable twisting it on the barrel. |
Yep, that is the best way to do it.
