Sorry, not too serious, better water in head, than in engine of a classic 911, 912, 914. Imo, suggest a type 4 based engine, if not original. Don´t hurt your body.

Do not worry, there is no value hurt. I still have the original 912 engine and no permanent modifications would be made.

I was simply curious if anyone had done this before. I have been able to collect a bit more info since I posted this and it seems like it would be doable.

I haven't done it but I can see you could use the 914 flywheel which if I'm not mistaken will bolt to the WBX. As well as the 911/912/914 clutch and pressure plate.
Then there's all the wiring, plumbing, etc etc

I have seen some wierd conversions but not that.
2.1 DJ into a beetle yes. More than once.
The engine is not particularly a good unit, with a mass of pipework, overcomplicated..
Now parts are difficult to find.
It drives OK and was quiet but was not particularly powerful or economical in the bus I had. It needs super unleaded fuel.
The one I had developed a fault with a diaphragm causing overfuel ing and a fire.
More original cars are always worth the most (not anything electric converted either).
I suppose the train of thought is some 912 2.0 were basically vanagon engines and the 2.1 waterboxer is the next development.
