i understand why a person would not want to ask a set price for a certain "item" and i am suggesting that the option for a non-monetary "price" be discontinued.

Strongly disagree. "Make Offer" being permitted does not make thesamba.com classifieds an "auction site", and it is most certainly a legitimate sales technique. No one is forced to play the game, so it it does not interest you, just move along.

There are also circumstances (such as multiple items being offered in an ad) which makes the requirement for
a numerical entry nonsensical.

People would just put "1" like you see elsewhere so any attempt to enforce this would unfortunately be useless and an ongoing battel to monitor.

I have stated this before but as a seller, you are creating a situation (in most cases) where you are going to get a lot of time wasters who:
Have no idea of the value of something
Will low ball you
Or
You will get people asking "What is the price?"

The above is not a guess, this is 100% what happens when I have looked at the emails people get on "Make Offer" ads.
