Here’s a German market Beryl green 1961 ragtop that was built on May 6, 1961. Apparently these came with the 1962 and later taillights? Anyone else have one built after May 2nd? I’m now curious what else was changed. I’m guessing it got the 62-65 turn signal switch, and a 62 wiring harness. Anything else?

Your car was delivered to my home town, interesting.
Due to a new law VW had to deliver the new taillights imediately. So nearly all other countries still got the egg taillights until End of July.
I have a May 1961 car that was delivered to Portugal. It still has egg taillights but the same time it has the newer main harness with the additional wire for brake.
I believe in your case, the turn signal switch could still have 6 wires but only 3 of them in use. |
The turn signal switch in this one was replaced. For some reason, someone added a 66-67 turn signal switch, a 66-67 headlight relay, and some other relay. I’ll be getting rid of all of it to go back to what it should be. |

This is regarding the gas cap for my '60. I saw some posts about the '60 only gas tank, but could not find anything specifically about the gas cap. I ordered the "GAS CAP 56-60 80mm" from WW, but I suppose I should have measured it first because it was too big.
My question is this: Is the 70MM cap from the '61-67 the one that will also fit my '60? |

I don’t believe that is a factory tank.
They usually have a step down at the rear like the one below, and yours seems to be tall clear to the back. Looks like your trunk liner doesn’t like the shape of that tank either…

That’s a 60mm small neck tank - it’s factory, but wrong for your year. That tank was used intermittently from late 1952 to 1955, and usually associated with zwitter model 1952 to 1953. They are unusual - I’m going to stop short of calling them rare, as when the word rare is introduced suddenly things become gold plated. That tank looks oddly clean - either someone did a nice restoration or it’s a reproduction… I don’t think the small neck tanks are being reproduced.

Thanks, that's great information. I had no idea it was the wrong tank and no idea where it came from.
Looks like the tank is either restored or a reproduction. The inside of the tank is pristine as well. |

I did a little Go Ogling, and yes, they do reproduce the small neck tank… so what’s the fun in that.

If it’s clean inside like you said, and given the outward appearance, I would say that tank is a reproduction. The correct tank would be the hump tank that House posted.

Looks like you found my exact tank! Interesting that whoever bought it went with that particular tank..
Side note, I just ordered the cap from that site. Mine seems to have a nit of a leak. |

Here's a quick picture of my new to me 1960 ragtop bug. It's fairly original, a bit rough around the edges but serviceable and fun to drive. I surprised my daughter at school yesterday picking her up. She had no idea I drove to VT to get it. She's hooked!
Eventually I'll start a proper thread on it |
