Not reading a thread is easy.
Jeep’s use blue thread locker., tundras Red. It’s a Japanese flag thing |
Odd you mention this. Liquid medium thread locker made by Permatex “Loctite” it is blue, but if you buy Hondas version “Hondalock” it’s red.

My jeep has a locker axle
After a hard big flex wheeling session, some things do come loose, we bring big wrenches on our offroad trips. Some bolt heads and the surrounding metal I paint a contrasting color to the underlying surrounding metal so as to make it evident if a bolt head moves. All hardware is high grade for suspension and steering. The track bar is one part that can be an issue, along with the steering box if one is pushing big boulders a lot.
If you fail to keep things tight, the jeep quickly becomes a heap.
Do fourwheeling Syncros have particular hardware that might come loose? What parts need locktite on the suspension and steering to prevent loosening? You Syncro owners paint the bolt and surround to detect movement? What is the Syncro protocol for this? |

Zactly. 50 years of driving E-Types set my 'sports car handling' expectations rather high. |
I wonder if non-US advertising mentioned the Vanagon's sports car handling?
As mentioned, US cars emphasized couch like seating and remarkably poor handling. What US cars in the late 70s might be considered sports-car like? The corvette??? Special editions of Fox mustangs?
I knew virtually nothing about sports car handling until a friend took me for a ride in his 260Z. I'd never experienced anything like it despite my dad having an old corvette which was fun but hardly confidence inspiring. Certainly, the 1980 Caprice Classic Estate did not possess sports car handling.
Marketing departments speak to weaknesses. A Vanagon running through a slalom of cones was a mystery to americans who never imagined a station wagon doing the same. _________________ - Jim

Yes this was the marketing at the time. You wouldn't call a wagon a "Wag On". The word wagon is pronounced more like "Wag-En". Vanagon is therefore pronounced "Van Again". Not "Van-A-Gone".
Don't even bother asking the Porsche people how to pronounce their manufacturer. You'll get at least five different answers. _________________ - George

“VAH-guhn”.
Please, it’s German.
I’m so glad we’re finally getting to the critically important content in this thread…

Yes Van-a-gun is correct. Same sound as Wah-uhn. If you say it like Octogon your language is broken.

US-spec passenger Vanagons would have been called Caravelle or Multivan in Germany. We never got the commercial models that were badged as Transporters. |

I dont know but I have big money in my syncro westy 1.8t conversion and its worth more then a $100k in my opinion. Van prices are down dude. Get in while you can. When the economy rebounds they will go up.

does the tarp under the engine/trans catch gold drips or something that makes it worth that much? Don't put gold dust in your engine or trans case, and then you won't have to worry about catching it... Hmmm... maybe there ARE some oils out there that promote gold as a sweet lube! I better get looking for that right away! Then MINE can be worth putting a tarp under, so I can be a gold prospector too!

I keep tarps under all my cars just in case. I challenge you to strip a syncro down to bare metal, metal and bodywork done high quality and do a full 1.8t conversion and all the upgrade, accessories, systems and a real quality paint job and tell me how much when your don?? Keep track of receipts and hours.
Painted in and out.

I appreciate what you're saying and have lived it myself but let's be real here...
you overbuilt for the neighborhood. you'll never get it back
I did the same with a bay window. you can literally shave in the frame rails because it's so clean and the best offer I had was 70k some years ago
Nobody is going to pop for that now, or in the future
bottom line is you did yours for you, just like I did mine for me. You can't expect the market to bear that decision _________________
