For you 20w50 guys. Five quarts, high zinc, under 20 bucks and it's prime.

20W-50 is only good for old worn engines and during a heat wave.

Thanks, i'll pass.

The importance of choosing the correct oil weight.

Castrol GTW 20W-450 5 quarts $18.68

Good idea Glenn, with your low mileage engine Wink

My point is there's no one size fits all.

Glad you consider a 2180 with 40,000 miles as low mileage.

Too bad they aren't selling a grade I could use. I run 5w20 in the sand rail, 10w30 in the street buggy and Golf, 5w40 in the TDI and 15w40 in the Cummins.

...oh wait... they won't ship to Canada anyway! Rolling Eyes

Of course I’m goofing with you Glenn Very Happy But a local Vanagon shop and the local builder of my WBX engine both recommend breaking in with 20/50 first 1000 miles. This always seemed counterintuitive to what I’ve learned over the years with aircooled engines. I would never run 20/50 in my low mileage type 1 engine. I’m coming up on my 1000 mile oil change on the WBX. I follow my builders instructions since it’s his warranty. Plus it’s the same instructions as GoWesty for their engines.

During the first 10,000 miles:

1) Monitor oil consumption carefully; check oil at EVERY gasoline fill-up.
Note: The distance between the two notches on the dipstick is NOT one quart. Adding a full quart when oil level is at the bottom notch WILL result in over-filling, very high oil consumption, and possible engine damage.
2) Keep the oil level closer to the lower notch than the upper notch.
3) Use 20/50 non-synthetic oil (any brand). Please switch to synthetic oil as soon as oil consumption has stabilized.

By the time you pay your Amazon prime membership you're really not saving much. Walmart has always been the cheapest place to buy motor oil. Anytime you mail order stuff you always have to worry about porch pirates stealing you stuff off the porch.

20W-50 is the wrong oil to use in a VW engine.

vwracerdave will you expand on this? I know you’ve forgotten more than I well ever know about air cooled cars but when other experts like Rocky Jennings Enterprises and Jerry from NW Connecting Rod (in addition to the others above) have recommended 20-50 for WBX engines. It gets conflicting. I’m just talking water boxer engines.

Is there something different about a WBX engines that makes 20-50 so popular and recommended, even on newer engines? I know not all wbx engine user run 20-50. I usually go with Wildthings oil recommendations because he has so many miles in VWs like mine.

I was refering to aircooled VWs and not water cooled VWs

Is there any concern with Amazon Castrol Oil being counterfeit product? There's already been issues with counterfeit spark plugs on Amazon... I usually get my oil from Summit or Jeggs.

Without derailing this discussion into the existing topic,
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=220755

... I think the reason for resisting 20W50 in ACVWs has to do with the relationship between oil temp and pressure, in regards to the pressure regulating valve and the oil cooler.

I'm old school, starting out with good ol' Castrol 30 wt for years, just as John Muir said. I live in temperate SoCal valleys.

Then as engines got older and needed thicker oil, the 20W50 was popular, and I jumped on the bandwagon. It seemed a little better with the hot idle oi light, but not by much. But I've learned that this is an illusion.

ACVWs use a oil pressure valve that diverts oil to the cooler based not directly on temperature, but on oil pressure. It assumes that hot oil is thinner, and needs more cooling. So low pressure diverts oil to the cooler. As the engine gets hot the cooler is used more and more to cap temperatures.

But if you thicken the oil (by using 20W50), it will have better idle pressure... but it will mean the valve does not divert oil to the cooler, which you really want it to do when its hot!

So it seems counter-productive to have thicker, hot oil, which as 20W50 can do.

So these days I use 30 wt Valvoline VR1, and occasionally put up with a low idle oil light when hot. But I think it's better for the engine while running hard to have the extra cooling, despite (and because of) the thinning of the oil.

Some good thinking, with hard data, in this thread:
