|
|
Im driving a 1971 Squareback w/ manual transmission the engine is stock 1600cc
Dual Weber 34 ICTs I've been running a Bosch 009
However, I found a Bosch 311 905 205 AG distributor, it's a SVDA (w/ electronic ignition)
(old volks home reports that it is to be a 1973 only)
Once I tap the manifolds for vacuum ports and connect the vacuum lines into the vacuum advance canister and set the Timing @ 5deg BTDC
My question is:
Would it make any difference if I keep the FI trigger points in the distributor or not?
I wouldn't be plugging it into anything and they would be causing unnecessary drag on the distributor shaft.
If anyone has done this or thought of doing it please let me know your results.
If not, I'll do it and let you know what the difference will be.
Id delete the FI trigger points and cover the large opening they slid in through.
I'd cover the opening on the distributor by screwing an aluminum patch onto it. |

No reason to keep them there. |

Agreed. In my case I just left them in there to plug the hole. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Maybe trade your working points for someone's busted set, and gut it to act as a cover? |

This! Make yourself a simple plate to cover the hole. Clean, test and sell the trigger points. I keep telling those who use D-jet.....to collect a handful of sets. They are no longer made.
Its not enough knowing that you just have a good workimg set in your car....kr maybe one spare set laying in a box.
There are a handful of ways these can go bad and its not always a simple fix.

Bus Depot has them listed - https://www.busdepot.com/1230090005 - I've found them to be a good source for Type 3 parts that many vendors don't carry.
I agree, though, keep some known-good spares handy - especially this type of niche item, which probably won't be sold much longer. _________________ 1968 Regatta Blue Squareback |

Nice to see....but make sure they are either NOS....or used. The few "rebuilt/refurbed" trigger points I have ever come across were junk.
If they are new...and it does say they are Bosch....thats a pretty fair price!
But...be aware....I can tell you from the picture...that is NOT a type 3 part (311 905 301). It does not mean it cannot be made to fit but it has strange inner tabs and a different outer plug body. Just be careful. This part IS out of production...but others may not be.

"Once I tap the manifolds for vacuum ports and connect the vacuum lines into the vacuum advance canister and set the Timing @ 5deg BTDC"
Are you tapping the manifolds or porting the carbs???? |

Just wondering does anyone know how to remove these trigger points to clean? As I took the two screws out but there appears to be something else holding it in I'm just not seeing? _________________ Looking for Groovy Bumper Stickers? Check out my Ads! |

I'd only drill and tap the manifolds for a balance tube. As for a vacuum line to the distributor use either the left or right carb, as there's a ported vacuum fitting on them that's capped off (rubber cap). _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

I would expect slight resistance as the pair of points have to compress their springs as they are pulled over the cam lobes. _________________ Current Fleet:

Thanks I got them out as there's two little studs on the bottom of these points that was holding it in I just had to pull a little harder on. Which now that I got out really don't appear to be that dirty trying to fix a sputtering problem I'm having when I step on the gas after trying everything in the book to remedy this. _________________ Looking for Groovy Bumper Stickers? If it's idling fine....no sputtering at idle
If it's cruising fine....no sputter at steady cruise
It's probably not the trigger points but it's good to check.
The most common quick checks would be ground wires under the plenum on the case centerline, fuel pressure, TPS adjustment, ignition points and condenser and the ground wire on the points plate inside of the distributor. That last one is very common.

Although he has a FI distributor, the OP has a carb setup now. _________________ Current Fleet:

You'll want to cover any holes so that dust does not get inside. If your trigger points aren't any good you can just chop off the insides and reuse the plate as a cover. _________________ www.vwnos.com [email protected]
