It can be fun to blame things on prior owners, and in your car's case many times that was warranted. However, I think in this instance your throwout bearing clip simply gave way, as they can be prone to do.
Personally I'd replace the T.O. bearing, clutch disc, and pressure plate while I'm in there, but that's an opinion worth the price charged. Others may disagree. |
A tempered response to be sure— I suppose I am basing my opinion on the fact that there is but one such clip to be found.
Thanks Pete! |
If there were no pin in at all I don't believe the bearing would have lasted for a single clutch engagement.

Does his cross-shaft look ok?
It looks like it might have too much wear where the throwout bearing sits, making the amount of material between that area and the area where the retaining clips sit very thin.

Agreed, that doesn't look right. If I didn't know any better it almost appears that someone wrestled with the bearing clips too much and decided to clearance it. |

Trylon, I also think your throwout bearing arm is at the end of its life- and that you've been lucky that one of the arms has not broken off at the thin point. The thickness between the small (front) curve for the spring retainer and the large (rear) curve for the TO bearing is really thin.
Here's a shot of what a less-worn arm should look like (yamaducci gallery)-
Ignore the small holes above the curves, which were drilled by an owner for safety-wiring the parts to avoid them from falling off the arms. |

Is that the missing clip up there next to the starter? |

Ok, so let’s do the whole clutch assembly.
As usual, there seem to be many versions and none marked for the year of our car. And I am not even sure that the transmission is from ‘59!
Suggestions for parts shopping?

It doesn't look like the stock split case transmission. Look for the transmission number at the front passenger side of the transmission and use the beetle vin and chassis number chart on this site (under Technical) to find out what year it's from. From there you can find the correct part.
Here is an example. It's the stamped vertical number you are looking for:

Whelp, I find no stamped numbers on the transmission:
On another note:
Seems that we have the wrong engine seal as it puckers around corners. Is a correct one available?

That is a later transmission. The transmission number is just below the VW logo and you can make out a few numbers on your photo, but you will likely need to scrub it clean to read them. |

Looks like any 61-70 cross shaft kit will work on your transmission.
This video shows what you would be getting yourself into:

There's 2 different types of engine compartment seals, some have formed corners. Sort of like windshield seals with formed corners, usually referred to as "blocked" seals. Your seal looks like it was a straight seal without formed corners. _________________ Marc

Show us your flywheel. It's not by year but by size. It's either 180mm or 200mm. You might need to remove the flywheel wheel and resurface it too. _________________ '58 Ghia 2387cc with a Berg / Folts 5 Speed

Oo I think I know this one— remember our burned out 6-volt starter? The reason I realized we could rewire the car back to 6-volts? So we have the 6-volt flywheel, the smaller one right? _________________ 1973 Porsche 914 2.0

Yes, your 36hp has the 180mm flywheel. I put the Sachs in mine about 7 years ago (that's the one marked as "German made"). |

Hold on fellas! You can have a 6v 200mm flywheel, a 12v 200mm flywheel or a 6v 180mm flywheel. The stater teeth or the transmission year have no bearing on what size the flywheel is. You need to measure the cultch disc or flywheel to be sure. _________________ '58 Ghia 2387cc with a Berg / Folts 5 Speed

He posted the photo below of his clutch and flywheel on the previous page. It's a stock 36hp engine, and it sure looks like a 109 tooth flywheel versus a 130 tooth 200mm. I believe 36hp dowel sizes are pretty unique as well which limits what works with that engine without extensive machine work, which is hard to fathom someone taking the time to retrofit a 109 tooth 200mm 1500 type 2/3 for a stock 36hp.
Measuring won't hurt anything, but I'll stick with 180mm as being what he needs.
