Maybe I should just clean up the 59 used one I have them. I don’t think my early 56 has a bottom hook when the seat back is down. I’ll check for screw holes.

My later 56 does have the lower hook.
My rubber strap was white.

Might have found a local shop to put on my seat covers if not I’ll have to do it myself.

Here is my rear seat strap and pivot on the left.

The strap is long because the rubber stretched.

Note the ball is solid rubber with out a hole/relief in it.

Even more interesting is the pivot. It is just a ferrule with ring at the top like a hollow rivet . It is not like the later straps with a “full cover” like the 59 example next to it.

The 57 manual just shows a cone washer so several changes here.

Well, back to storage and almost done. Moving again as I want to retire at 60 so it might be a few months to a year to finish our 56. Florida bound in a few months.

I was test fitting the carpet, tunnel and rubber mats.

Ran her around the development loop for the first time and she ran fine. It’s been over 30 years to get this far. All gauges and brakes worked. Getting ready to load her up for the trip to Florida.

Well finally in Florida and both cars here. Had some trailer issues half way down but thanks to Tractor Supply we made it.

Maybe in a few months we will finish her.

Got to get some AC installed first.

We unloaded just to load her up again and go inland for the hurricane. No issues though with the new house.

Both cars are beautiful! What is the one on the left?

Happy you survived the hurricane!

It's an Alken, and it was beautifully restored:

I just wanted to say how great this thread is. I am rebuilding a '56 myself, mine is a November '56 in Antelope brown. I bought it on thesamba in 2010 and it came over to the UK from the USA. It was already a shell with boxes of parts so I've never seen it as a whole car.. hence my appreciation for your detailed photos and descriptions. Thanks!

You are welcome. My move stalled my restoration some but we are hoping to finish her early next year.

Well a hurricane and flood surge had some impact on our girl and the Alken. The Thing was a trooper and our only car for 2 weeks as our 2 new electric cars were bricked like iPhones dropped in a pool. Pretty crazy right now but she is on deck to be finished. Thanks for your energy to help us get her to the finish line

Update at bottom on seal part number 66

56 to early 57 tail light lens

These lenses did not have the rubber packing seal between the lens and the bezel as seen in this photo of my car

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Here are some photos from January 57 parts manual where the rubber packing does not exist

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

In a later, 1958 parts manual you can see that the rubber packing part 66 is added

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

The screws that hold on the bulb holder, and the bezel are Ghia specific part numbers. If anybody has found a substitute for these I would like to know, and we could post it here. The ones holding on the basil are the most important and seem to be about 25 mm long. 141 945 185 part for bezel

I find it interesting, like most Volkswagen light fixtures, that they are not grounded. The rear lenses do have a terminal inside to attach a ground wire. I will run a ground wire from each of these lights into the firewall to assure that I have a good ground.

In the following pictures you can see I found some NOS packing for the bulb holders and they’re still pretty soft.

Here in my box of seals I think this is the added seal 66 and it is split to accept the lens in it, it has a VW logo and hella part number I can not read. Not sure how it would fit with my bezel. Maybe they made newer ones.
