I have said it for a few years. 3-4 years ago Mahle P&Cs started showing up with AA cylinders, with the "AA" ground off the bottom of the cylinder. I'm guessing Mahle realized they could save a ton of money by letting AA do the cylinders for them. |
Trying to figure out if the older set of Mahle 94p/c I have pre-date the point where Mahle started using AA cylinders. I cannot see anywhere on the cylinders where AA may have been ground off. Does this stamping indicate the origins of these cylinders?
They were used just to establish oil pressure on my 2332 about 10yrs ago & I probably purchased them at least 10 yrs before that. This would date them pre 2005. Getting ready to sell the set to purchase RevMaster cylinders to go with my 94 Icon forged pistons and I would like to be able to tell the next owners if they are getting a genuine Mahle set or ones with AA cylinders.
Thanks! |

I did a google search for Mahle 94s just to see what they are worth and cannot find any Mahle cast 94s for sell. All listing for 94s are forged and I can only find the 85.5 and 87mm in the cast versions.
Were the Mahle 94s available in the cast versions once upon a time or were they always forged? Would be great if they’re forged. |

Some more pics if anyone can determine if these pre-2010 mahles are forged or cast.
Thanks
Just did a little more research on my own from the STF forum & this number stamped on the under side of the piston “92P31” indicates they may be older CIMAs and the P means forged.
MAHLE, Inc.
Aftermarket Engineering
For the aircooled VW kits we import to the US, most are either cast or forged. I'm not aware of any pressure cast (or squeeze cast) pistons that we currently offer for these kits. The easiest way to distinguish between either configuration is in the numbers cast/pressed into the pistons themselves. Each piston will have a designation on the inside that identifies the raw casting (or forging).
This particular sample is for a 97mm aircooled Porsche. The casting number I refer to is 97P12. The 'P' indicates this piston is forged. Mahle uses the following "codes" to designate the raw castings:
P Forged piston
F Squeeze-cast piston
L Solid skirt cast piston
V Auto-Hydrothermik or Auto-Hydrothermatik cast piston (piston w/ cast-in steel struts)
However further discussions in the thread questioned as to whether they are actually true forge pistons???
Also found this older Samba thread from 2007 that questions as to whether the Cima/Mahle pistons being sold as forged were actually that.
