Whelp my shock mounts did not work out so I had to improvise and do some chopping. I spent pretty much the whole evening figuring this out.

The result.

From that I reworked the old ones so I guess these are phase 2.

You can get an Idea of placement from the old one but it lines up pretty good.

Even the hole is nuts on.

I like it when things work out like your thinking.

So tires bottomed out in the wheel well I have about 1/2 inch of travel left in the shock and fully extended I have about 1/4. I am going to put a wedge in on the bottom so I can go full lock with out blowing the shock out. Going to be converting my Bro in law thing to IRS this weekend so not working on mine. Mine was the experiment so I sorta know what I am doing. It should be a lot easyier . All for now..

Been trying to get though this... but I finally got the shock mounts on.

I think I still need to tie the old shock mount into the new setup. I feel it would stiffen it up a wee bit more. Hopefully will get sometime this next week.

Still looking good tucked!

Trying to get my clearance issues finished up so I can run the brake lines.

Here its all the way up. The bags will be fully compressed at this point and making sure there is no rubbing on the spring plates.

Having the travel this far means you have to also clearance for the bolts.

All good and plenty of room.

As mentioned in a few post back going to tie that cut part into the bag mounts to stiffen it up and tie it together. All for now.

Been working but no time to post so big pic dump.

That stringer I was talking about the bag frame and what is left of the shock mounts.

I was able not to burn up the body gasket on both sides. worked on one while the other cooled.

Kept staring at it and thought it looked like it was half done so I boxed them up.

Need to clean them up a little but pretty happy with them.

Brake lines... These were holding me up for few days and if I would not have opened the can of lowered worms, I could have just used the stock locations. Now that the bag brackets are in the way, I have to run them wherever I have room.

Had to buy new hard lines as the ones from my donor clip where shot. Took about a week for them to get here. Drivers side, yes I like to reuse as much as I can. Smile

welded the old tabs on and I am going to reuse the clips.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

I welded a 10mm nut to a tab so I could use the stock 3 way. I will have to plug the one side though.

Reused the short line off the 68 swing axle setup. Its spaghetti but its solid and does not move around.

used the stock hard line along the back as this one is extra long.

and spaghetti again on the end.

I ended up using the strait connector also from the 68 hard lines with another tab.

Back up again...

Took me two days to run all the lines..

Things are moving along now.

Media blasted my arms, spring plates and cover.

so I cut this neck off the spring plate and I will update on the next post.

Got the spring plates and arms painted on Friday. The spring plate covers are getting redone and will update when those are done. In the next two weeks going to restore the bolts or try. Anything is way better than what they are now.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Might have some more during the week but pretty much stalled till the bolts are done and frame finish cleaned up. On side note looking for a decent match for my paint under my fenders. I don't really want to paint that black as I think it would look stupid. Laughing

Worked on one of my caps for my spring plate covers. I'm just going to weld it on the back and paint it. I did not like the long spring plate neck sticking out.

I like the way it looks and it cleans it up. Not much going on right now probably finish the other side and paint them. Right now I have painted parts sitting around. Hopefully in the next week or two will get some major stuff done.
All for now...

Nice update! I like the statement, “Hurry up and wait.”! It is what came to mind reading your post. I find myself in a similiar position. Sitting around and waiting. In these comments during the restoring, I try to take care of the small items. As an example, the engine tins. I have been blasting them, replacing rusty steel on them and then painting them. I can knock out only a few every couple of hours, if everything lines up, just right! It that rarely happens. Regardless, keep the project moving on all of those little things.

I check your thread a few times a week. So, keep on making forward progress, I need new, positive stuff to read. It helps get me out to my project!

Thanks for the pep talk! I often wonder if anyone is following along on my journey. I have my 11 yr old daughter telling me when it's nice out, " dad you could be driving your bug today if it was finished" . I kid you not even my 15yr daughter does it too. They both love riding in the dub. I have been planning this since I first got it and It was now or never. My brother in-law has a thing we are converting over at the same time so we keep each other going. It's the cleaning phase so it's pretty boring.

You could ask the Mods to move your thread over to the 68and up section. There is a lot more action over there! I am
Sure you would get several more comments every time you posted up progress. Helps to keep the fire stoked! For myself, it helps keep me accountable. I start seeing my thread move further down the page and I get upset. That motivates me to go do something! If you look at the last few pages of my 54 Oval build, the last few pages are me taking care of the small items. All stuff that will soon play a role after I rebuild the transmission. Check it out;

Maybe it will light a fire for you!

I've been following your build(s) for a long time! Since before I owned a VW at all. Now I've got a 68 sitting out in the garage on jackstands as I'm working on getting my static drop tuned in! Your build threads are an inspiration and a point of learning for me for sure.

I have made mistakes but I am pretty honest about them . I really don't want someone else to go through the same thing as it's very frustrating. This trans, I have no idea if it's good or not. I guess we will find out soon enough. LOL Glad your enjoying it I hold no secrets on my combo as I think it's dumb to do that and nobody learns anything that way. Hopefully I'm getting cleaning again tomorrow.

Was able to get the frame painted. It turned out ok but its better than what it was before. I would be more concerned if I drove this in the Pacific North West weather everyday.

Started to clean the trans. I was just using a wire brush no sure if I am going to paint it silver or just gloss black.

Need to find the correct color for the savannah beige in Krylon. I think this might be the one.

Krylon K02713007 Khaki Fusion All-In-One Paint & Primer Spray Paint, Gloss
