Any hints would be appreciated!

This is another example of the Fire Dept going nuts trying to locate the fire source. The door must have been locked and they went to town prying it open (why they didn't just go though the window is a mystery) Note the damage to the front as they tried to open the front hood. Rolling Eyes

Looks like the fire was concentrated in the front of the van. Much more fire damage up front and the area around the radiator is torn up.

Front left corner looks the worst, the left headlamp looks much worse than the right, and large puncture in the sheet metal next to the antenna hole. Maybe the fire started in the Fusebox area?

The transaxle looks heavy duty. Is that a Subagears unit?

That’s definitely a FAS engine conversion. The transmission is stock vw. It looks different because it has an adapter plate for the FAS engine conversion. The fire looks like it was in the front so it probably it wasn’t the usual bad fuel lines. Someone had a lot of money it that van. The fire must have been devastating to them. On the bright side someone got a great deal on a FAS engine conversion and what looks like a rebuilt transmission. John

Yeah, and I was thinking of it's FAS it is diesel which would less likely be a fuel fire.

How can you tell diesel from the photo? I guess the fact that the engine didn't burn is a pretty good clue.

It's giving off electrical fire vibes. Van seems to be well accessorized, so could be sketchy wiring / unfused circuit at the battery or fuse box.

I thought FAS did only diesel conversations.

Definitely looks like a great way to get a rebuilt transmission at the very least. I don't know if the wiring or motor is any good though. Does the FAS kit put the wiring and ecu in the cabin? Certainly the major engine swap bits of the engine swap like the carrier bar, oil pan, and transmission adapter plates look good.

Maybe it was a failed brake switch that caused the fire.
