Just had my heads redone and new pistons and cylinders on my 40hp. Engine starts and runs fine (except for maybe a little exhaust leak). But I have ran it maybe a total of 30 minutes. Check oil and it’s about half way between full and add marking. It was full when first started. Is that much oil consumption normal until all the rings and everything seat? No oil leak noticed. |

So about a quart low after 30 minutes?
Shouldn’t be so.
Fill it up again and run it for another 30.
See if it’s repeatable. _________________ Volkswagen!

If you checked the oil immediately after shutdown after running it awhile the oil might appear to be low. As it's still draining back from valve covers. Let it sit awhile before checking and see what you see.
As Brian e said, run it hard up and down some hills and seat those rings before you glaze them over. _________________ early-

Thanks guys. Yea it’s possible I checked it too early before the oil had a chance to circulate and make its way to the valve covers. It will be a while before I can run it hard, still got the car torn apart rebuilding floor pans now. I just bolted the engine up after rebuild to give it a quick run. Only thing I can do for a while is just start it up and let it run ever so often. Can’t go anywhere. |

Just turn it over by hand a few times once in a while.
I would keep from running it till you are able to get a good load on it.
This is why I always tell people not to get a new engine build under way till the car is in the paint booth. Nothing worse than a fresh engine sitting in the corner for years.
