Hi there. I own a 1965 Notchback. I'm getting started at reassembling the vehicle after way too many years of it sitting. I'll be ordering a headliner kit/etc.. from ISP West this week and wanted to ask here for any tips. I do have the 6 bows that I took out when I stripped the card down for body/paint work many years ago. I may have the other miscellaneous clips/parts, etc... The main problem I'm having is remembering where all the padding was that I took off. I do see remnants around the pillars from when I stripped it off, but forgot to take photos. This would be pre-cell phone camera times.

I've looked around the web for specific Notchback headliner installations but couldn't find many detailed photos/videos/guidelines, etc... specific to the notch.

Any help in this area would be great! Thanks.

Nate

Awesome!!! Thanks for the photos.

What are the white pieces below the inside light and near the front windshield? After further looking, looks like those are solid white vinyl pieces attached directly to the metal? Also, is that the factory padding on the roof...I'm just wondering if 5lb/3/8 carpet padding would fit there.

Thanks again,
Nate

I believe it's just some thin white foam. Just needs a thin layer of padding on the B and A pillars.

The roof has some sisal padding. I can take some better finished headliner shots if needed.

I just did my notch headliner in the last few weeks. Like you it had been years since it was taken apart and not much there to begin with. I found pics in the gallery searching "notchback sunroof headliner" that helped me out. Also, the Bently has info on the headliner installation, like the smaller bow end pieces going up front, bigger in back.

Thanks for the info. I'll do a search in the gallery for that notchback thread. Not sure about the Bently, but is that another user forum? I'll hunt around the web and see if I can find any info. I'll also post some progress photos in the next week or two when I get all the parts and start on the install. I may have a few follow up questions also...

Thanks again for chiming in.

You should look up Mark's (W1K1) Squareback headliner install pics, as there's a few good tips on installing it yourself.

I realized the Bently is referring the the big blue manual I've already got. I'll take a look at that for install tips. I did take a cloth measuring tape to all the bows and a few of the longer ones are about the same length and the three smaller bows decrease in increments of about an 1/8th inch.

I'm waiting on the insulation to arrive tomorrow and will take a shot at the install this weekend.

Originally it's some sort of thin (1/4 inch) sisal padding for both the "A" and "B" posts, plus along the top of the door openings and above the rear windows. A wider piece is used for the rear of the rear side windows ("C" posts), to even out the padding under the head lining material. At least that was what was used on both my 65 and 71 Notchbacks. I hope this helps.

I did order some felt padding at about that thickness, maybe just slightly thicker. I've also been looking at various photos from the Bentley manual and online regarding the headliner/padding installation.

I fished some 14/2 romex from the dome light down the A? pillar that feeds under the driver side dash area. I know that's probably overkill as far as the amp draw of that light, but I can just use it later on to pull the correct size wire.

Any other wires/etc.. that need to be pulled before placing the headliner?

Also, what exactly is the large hole at the top of the quarter window that looks to go down the pillar toward the rear? There is one on each side of the car.

That's for the rear drain on sliding roof models.

Shoulder belt mounts? Remember up to 66 in the USA, vehicles were NOT required to have seat belts. Early seat belts were just a shoulder belt that crossed over your chest. The next step from there was lap belts, then in 1968 came 3 point seat belts. There were all sorts of belt connections depending on who made the belt.

That makes sense about the draining for the sliding roof. Looks similar to the drain ports under the dash area.

Yes, those are the seat belt mounts but I don't recall those being in use when I purchased the car. There are also what look to be mounts for the bracket if I had pop out quarter windows.

I'm pretty sure that the only items needed to mount in the headliner for my 1965-N model is the driver sunshade and clip, rear view mirror, driver and passenger grab handles and dome light. It might be prudent to upgrade the front seat belts so I might cut out for the shoulder mounted versions. There's already a bolt hole in the pan on each side which I believe is where the seat belt anchors? I just don't know which belt/s came with the car. I'll have to look through all the parts to see if I can find them.

If you really look around, you'll notice no seat belt mounting hole along the floor on either side (no outer lower mount for either a lap belt or a 3 point belt. If the car didn't have any belts installed previously, then you'll need conversion bushings for the tunnel side for the front seats (to reduce down to 7/16-20 seat belt bolts). Some drill a hole in the floor pan for the outer belt mount, and sandwich a couple of plates or big washers, to keep from ripping the floor. Others cut into the inner rocker skin, and add a nut and plate welded together and install it near the rear of the door opening (it'll get covered in carpet). You'll have to decide which way you want to go on that one. Myself I cut into the inner rocker and added a mounting plate there, then covered it in carpet. I also added outer lower mounting points for the rear seat too (lap belts), as my kids rode in the car.

The pan I've got has the holes drilled into already for the outer mounts. I'm pretty sure that I had pulled out those mounts and there were those large metal plate washers.

On second glance, my car might be a 1964. I've been going off the title year which says 1965 but the VIN is 0461772 which looks like it falls in the May of earlier 1964 category.

This VIN would be June of '64.

Sanded and primed the inside roof before installation of headliner padding.

Before I get started installing the insulation, I'm noticing a lot of newer headliner installations have foil/butyl backed tape installed. Kilmatz is the one on your notchback in the photos. What is the benefit of the kilmatz vs. just installing the cotton/felt liner on the roof? It looks to add some mass with the butyl material...is that what's going on there?

Not sure if should do that first. I've noticed some asphalt based products have been used as well, but my hesitance would be potential odor and melting and falling from the roof at high temperatures.

I don't know, if it was good back in 1964 maybe the felt liner will do just fine.
