Had a tappet noise in the hydraulic lifters of the 2.0 1976. So added some sea foam and drove it enough , but it did not go away. Checked oil pressure and not great, so put in a better oil pump. Still there. So did not think much of it and re set the lifters (found 2 aluminum push rods) so replaced them. still there. It still runs so decided to remove and service the distributer. Turning it over to pre set number 1 the engine stopped. I mean seized. Didn't expect that , so removed the spark plugs for a borescope look. Motor unseized??? Looked at the spark plugs and #3 was squashed. Asked friend John to take a look and he said piston was OK. "By the way what's this stamping mean?? " what stamp- "It says "GEX" on it." Never mind Problem explained. So half way thru building my new motor and will run on spacers till it is refit. |
So what caused the smash? Spark plug holes too deep? |
I don't think they measured the compression ratio and over cut the heads bringing all the stuff closer to the spark plugs. Am going to shim the spark plugs to see what happens- and yes there is a replacement motor being assembled as we speak _________________ some days I get up and just sit and think. Tried to find a body shop to repair hit and run damage. Two days after getting a dogleg replacement. Bummer.

I wasn't really sure where else to put this... so here it is.
I had a Chuck Box made for our camping kitchen. A great builder on ETSY made it with a lot of collaboration and modifications to fit my gear.
He added some components I wanted, and was great to work with.
I'll admit its a bit heavy when loaded, but so far I can manage it.
It arrived too late in the season to use it anyplace but my driveway so far.......
Painted to match my bus.
It is pretty compact and fits easily behind the passenger seat
Top hinges open and is supported by retractable brackets.
I have a few more things to do like add the paper towel holder and add a pull on the drawer, but I want to use it a time or two before I do any other modifications.

Very cool Andrew!
Looks like a great designer and a skilled craftsman collaborated well to make this a reality! _________________ -Kent-

Kent,
As a cabinet maker, I think you can appreciate it when the client can speak your language. That makes communication so much smoother, and things are accomplished more quickly, with much less ambiguity. _________________ '75 Riviera - 'BIG EMMA' - Travel Beast

Cut out the deteriorating windscreen rubber seal and removed the windscreen to treat the metal.
Not as bad as I was expecting. _________________ 1978 Beetle, 1978 T2 Panel Van |

My rear shocks have been working themselves loose every few weeks or so after I relocated the extenders to the top to mount the rear sway bar.
Finally got around to switching the extenders to the bottom again and narrowing the L bracket to make them fit inside the extenders. I hope that this will solve the issue.

Worked at removing loose rust on the inside of a front bumper using a magnet on a cane.

Took off the driver door to replace all window seals; put on a donor door and a big gray car cover to keep rain out until done. _________________ Craig K

Installed a FI Butty's Bits linkage on my 76 Automatic Bus.
In hindsight, I should have waited to buy the Combo Butty's Bits linkage or even the one for a carburetor but the Combo linkage was out of stock.
The FI linkage works but with the combination of my Subaru swap plus a Vanagon 010 Automatic, I have a heavy pedal with the FI linkage. I need to move the cable attachment point closer to the fulcrum point to gain a bit more leverage and make the pedal a bit lighter/more normal to operate.
Update:
Instead of returning it, I made up a better positioned lever shape out of aluminum and used he Butty's Bits bearings and fasteners.
I now have a really nice responsive feel to the throttle pedal but have had to get used to not having to press so hard on the pedal when accelerating. I spun the tires a few times during the first few drives. I think my wife can now drive it if necessary as before she was uncomfortable with the heavy pedal. _________________ *******************************

Finally got around to connecting up my driving lights and linked them into the high beam circuit via a relay.
Added a multi-gauge unit (speed, compass, pitch & roll angle, elevation, lat & long coordinates, voltage, & clock) on the dash and a transmission oil temp gauge as the 3rd in the gauge cluster.

Been seeing a bunch of posts in the Vanagon forums lately about automatic transaxle issues so thought it was good timing to pull the pan on the trans and do a quick inspection as it's been 40,000k.
Happy to report that the trans fluid was still a lovely red colour, no odor, the pan was clean, and the filter looked good as well. Installed a new filter and gasket as I already had them in hand and put new synthetic trans fluid in. Did a quick check of the final drive oil and it was where it should be and looked clean too so I didn't touch it.
Went through the CV bolts to make sure they hadn't loosened and checked the CV boots with all 4 looking good. I went to the EMPI Off-road boots about 20,000 km ago and they look like the day I installed them.
I have a new trans fluid sensor ready to install but I will wait until summer before I connect it up as everything looked great so I believe the external trans fluid cooler is doing its job even in 100F temps over the last few summers pulling the trailer over the mountains to the BC Interior. _________________ *******************************
