Hey Guys, so I just did a full detail on my 67 DC that's all original Ca truck never hit, never paintwork, etc. The truck now has 62,000 miles and has been with me since the early 1970s. At any rate, I got ambitious with the staff and we cleaned and power washed the inner wheel-wells, front and rear, and there is no undercoating on the metal. Did they come with it? Like the early Porsches?

undercoat was a dealer add-on. Rarely seen on buses delivered to LA, but far more common on buses from the northeast for example.

Great to know! I’ll take some pics and then try to figure out how to post them!

Having no undercoating is what has likely saved your bus. Apart from the barnacles and crustiness one gets close to shore- your bus has had maintenance I imagine. When the whole underside is sprayed with black goop people go longer to replace cables, brake lines, adjust front ends, etc. Let alone the seasonal bliss if falsely thinking your car is protected against everything.

Clean! Yes, that is how they looked originally when no undercoat was applied.

My '63 looks similar, except dirty

Mine did. It was a kosmoline type of stuff. Covered the entire underside too. These pics are after starting to clean it off. Tried Purple Power, Diesel, Gas, Thinner, everything I had in the garage. Original paint underneath. Also 67 DC. Also So Cal all its life.

I was thinking of cleaning up my bus chassis and floor this winter and then applying some primer and undercoating to help protect the metal (or so I thought). Before I get cracking on this gravity challenging and dirty project can you share more as to why this is a bad idea. I can’t stand rust anywhere on my bus and while I only have surface rust like some of the photos included I was looking forward to getting rid of it.

Problem is with undercoating and bed liner is once rust has happened before the coating, it can act more like a greenhouse for rust. Especially when the coating is scratched or rock chipped thru later, and then rust can spread in veins under the coating and even paint.

The only undercoating we would try would be Waxoyl. Undercoatings that work well and long term are ones that are soft to almost the point of old semi hardened grease that you find on the front suspension and stay that way for many many years to decades. Even then one must be ready to inspect and recoat if need be.

Looking really nice under there.

It really depends on the undercoating you use. In the old days mostly the black bitumen stuff was used. Not a good idea, because it tended to crack and water and salt got under it. And you couldn't tell until it was too late.

Today you can use a clear coat of wax based undercoating. this will protect your undercarriage but you can still see if you have any damage. But, You will have to refresh the wax coating every so often.

In California you can probably get away without undercoating but in wet climates like here in Germany you are better off to have some protection.

agree with previous two posters and recommend clear waxoyl or lanoguard (made from lonolin). yes it's messy but worth it, remember to keep it clear of the brakes.
I've seen many scandinavian beetles advertised and they look good but underneath is smothered in old black bitumen which is a deal breaker for me.
