I have a 1972 bug that my family bought in the mid to late 80s. This was my first car. Didn't run and was the first thing mechanical I worked on when I was in high school. Drove it daily for 3-4 years till I bought a 74 ghia in '99. Getting my bug back on the road and my block code is AB. Originally had an alternator fuel pump but was replaced (generator installed with voltage regulator under back seat) also has a Solex 34Pict-3. No clue if the engine was ever touched before we bought it. It is a dual port. Did VW build 1600s with an AB block or do I have, possibly, an imported car with a 1300cc DP? I always thought because of the year and being DP that it was a 1600.
Thanks in advance. New to the Samba. _________________ Shaggy

Most likely it's a 1600. You can pull a valve cover off and look up the part number that is on the head. it will be stamped inside there. _________________ www.vwnos.com [email protected]

Thanks for the quick reply. Some other things, the fan shroud does not have a doghouse oil cooler. Its straight on the back. Had a vacuum advance distributor. When getting it running in '95, replaced the fuel pump and rod, replaced the old 34Pict-3 with a new solex and swapped to 009(dont know why ppl dont like em). I'll check but I belive they had "044" stamped (might have been on the 1641 I built for my ghia). Getting back in the hobby I've been out since 2003. _________________ Shaggy

VW went through a lot of different iterations with the doghouse cooler being one. As you have with the alternator pump you could just have a mishmash of parts. _________________ www.vwnos.com [email protected]

I'm pretty sure all 1600's from the factory came with the upright oil cooler in the dog house. |

Over the decades, parts were swapped all the time in these old VW's. Folks back in the day would blow up their engine. They'd then go to a VW junk yard and choose from plenty of used, complete engines. Back in the early 1980's, I remember going to a local VW junk yard. He had dozens of complete, tested good engines from wrecked bugs. Single port engines or dual port engines. They were dirt cheap back then too.
The engine case number is useless after decades. Most engine cases have been rebuilt a few times. I've seen 1973 engine blocks have 1960's single port heads installed. Unless the engine is disassembled to measure the pistons bores, you don't know if it's still a 1500/1600 engine either. The same goes with engine tin. _________________ Contact me at [email protected]

"the fan shroud does not have a doghouse oil cooler. It's straight on the back" Very confusing, The non-doghouse oil cooler is inside the shroud. Do you have an after market muti-row cooler that is in front of the shroud intake? |

I can see where that was confusing. The oil cooler is mounted directly on top off the block, internal to the fan shroud. The tin doesn't have the exit going through the front firewall tin under the rear of the passenger compartment. By straight I meant that the fan shroud was straight vertically above cylinder #3. _________________ Shaggy

An AB engine started life as a non-USA 1300 dual port, non-doghouse.
So it's still a dual port but could be a 1300/1500/1600. The only way to know is to remove the head and measure the piston. _________________ Glenn

Once I pull the valve cover and get numbers would that tell me if they are DP heads for 1300, 1500 or 1600? Really not ready to pull heads yet. The idea for this car is....
1. get it running
2. Pull engine and clean out furry creature nests and paint tins
3. Brakes and fuel system
4. Drive and enjoy
After that anything goes as yall are well aware. I'm not really hugely concerned with actual engine size, was just curious due to no internet in '95. It ran great when I was in HS. Ran when parked..lol. engine spins freely. Was covered in a carport in '99 till 6 years ago. Got it from west TN to my house in mid TN 6 years ago. Been covered in a barn till 3 weeks ago. Literally have done nothing except vacuum interior, new keys due to my mother loosing them and spark plug wires. Parts are arriving today or tomorrow for carb rebuild and pedal assembly rebuild. Dont even have a battery yet. _________________ Shaggy

Already planning on it. It gets freaking hot around here in the summer. Drove it from Memphis to Nashville several times during the summer's and (knock on wood) never had any trouble. I was OCD about maintenance on that car. Every oil change got valves points and timing adjusted. Was a ritual, as it has to be for ACVWs. It was never much to look at but I did a lot to that car in HS and my first year in college. Paint dont make it run, it just holds the car together. _________________ Shaggy

The easiest thing to do is pull the valve cover off and check the numbers cast into the heads under there. That will at least tell you the minimum size of the heads and pistons. _________________ www.vwnos.com [email protected]

Get it running, a good running 1300DP is better than a poorly running 1600DP. _________________ Glenn

I will say that I got quite exuberant at times driving(was young and dumb) and that thing was no slouch. It was very quick, not fast. I'm leaning to possibly an AB case built to a 1600 since it had a 34Pict-3. I could get on the interstate between 60 and 70 no problem, and stay there. _________________ Shaggy

I can take my 40HP up to 60 on the interstate. Some people do put the 34 PICT 3 onto smaller than 1600 DP engines. _________________ www.vwnos.com [email protected]
