PGE or PG&E?
We have PGE (Portland General Electric) here and they are the hugest thieves when it comes to power bills. Bastards have raised the price per KWH 2 times in the last few years. The kick in the balls is, they are gonna raise the rates again in 2025.

What is that stuff you're putting on the rear wheel bearing gasket and O-ring? Is it some sort of sealer, or grease? |

I just want to mention one little potential issue. When you run notched spring plates it becomes very likely that your upward travel suspension stop ends up being your axle tubes and transaxle side covers. Once that was pointed out to me I quit wondering why some slammed swingaxle Bugs eat transaxles.
Modok provided photos of his test fitting of lowered spring plates. _________________

You can rest at ease I have multiple reasons I’m ok with running these.
The first one is …. I have always said having a slammed car is “Fashion over Function “ It takes sacrifices for a dumped car
The second reason is that my hope is the camber compensator will do just that … it limits how much camber is introduced when the axle is actuated that high. I plan to monitor the tension/ resistance it gives and adjust it accordingly.
Third is when I reached out to chase and asked about possibly getting his dropped plates he said don’t even bother just rock the ones I bought off of him ten years ago. My plan was to try to save money everywhere I could and not buying new plates was one of them. I’m happy to rock this old school way of doing it. ( they are also extended so that will help with awkward binding in articulation of the axles as well)
Forth reason is that I can’t even tell you where this tranny came from in fact I don’t even know if it works yet lol. It’s probably a transmission I got for free. I’m happy to roll just the way I am and I’m fairly certain I won’t be eating through transaxles/axle I can be sure to report back !
Last and most important reason I don’t mind notched plates because there is nothing worse then the sound of the plates smacking against the stops. Hey there …. I appreciate the question very much.
So here is the product I used.
It’s been forever ago but I believe that I remember that the Bentley manual recommends using the gasket dry and that could have been ok decades ago when the replacement gasket was made in such a way that the cap would sink into it creating a seal. Nowadays they are mostly paper junk … some have density like the ones I’m using but nevertheless I always opt to use sealer here.
I smear on a thin layer with my fingertips. It was very cold in the shop so it was a bit of texture but the idea is to just not use so much that the sealant can potentially displace or clog anything like the weep hole for the gear oil that is designed encourage the oil to flow out and away from the shoes when the seal starts to fail.

To each their own. I do want to point out that the camber compensator will not change how much camber you have at any ride height. With a swingaxle car camber is determined by ride height. The only ways to reduce the camber at a given ride height is to raise the transaxle, widen the rear track, or run smaller tires. If you put the stock bump stop brackets back on and cut down some rubber bump stops you might be able to protect the transaxle from becoming the stop.
Modok figured out back in 2013 that there is only 2 degrees extra upward travel available on 1960 and newer Bugs. That is, 2 degrees up from the stock spring plate stop the axle tubes become the new hard stop inside the side covers. Back of the envelope calculation suggests that is about 7/8 inch of additional upward suspension travel by notching the spring plates.
Measuring with stock spring plates Modok determined:

With drop spring plates getting the spring plate hard stop out of the equation Modok measured:

This allowed it to travel up another 2 degrees, however it seems that this is all the travel the transmission allows, at this point the internal joint runs out of travel. I jacked it up a bit more but the engine started twisting Shocked
I tried the tire on it and it DID clear everything even at 11 degrees up.
So, these 1.2" lowering spring plates changed the travel thus:
Fully extended; 6 degrees, shock length 14"
Fully compressed; 11 degrees, shock length 9 3/4 |
