Hey Folks…..

Starting this mid week we are diving into this Oval Kab…
It is in my rotations starting out at a slower pace than usual but I will be updating as we progress. Thought I would start out with some shots post blaster and sealer powder coat primer. We haven’t done an early beetle in a while so I’m really looking forward to this one.

Almost as bad as the Ghia cabriolet you did for me. Can't wait to see this go back together.

Hey Mr Loren…. That was a fantastic time doing that with you. I can’t thank you enough for making it such an enjoyable journey.

This Kab definitely needs some serious love but I’m confident we will get it all sorted out. One major challenge is the driver side A Pilar. It will most likely need to be removed/replaced with a donor before the Wolf parts full front quarter can go on.

I got the Beetle Body Jig out of hibernation and put a fresh coat of paint on it. I have the body sitting in it as we speak to save footprints in the shop but once get going I will need to take it back out to finish the demo on the support rails. Once that is done is should fit nice and snug in the Jig so we can start attaching panels. This fixture makes things very nice for us. This will be a blast.

Loving it Folks. Thanks for following along.

Here is the current situation.

As of the last couple years I have been focusing on doing the doors on a project first. Once the damage is repaired and the hinges rebuilt I can then hang them on the car and use them in a “Perimeter Layout Process “ this allows me to properly layout the adjacent panels based off their location. This is especially helpful/ necessary with a convertible body.

With this resurrection I would consider it the majority of damage and less about rust repair.

The Kar most likely has spent a lot of time inside and or covered. The rust is minimal which is not common with the convertibles.

The driver side rear quarter has been replaced at one point in its life but very poorly executed. The good thing is that the donor panel is a good candidate to be reworked to remain a viable replacement.

As I mentioned before the driver side A pillar is most likely going to replaced and the Fixture will help tremendously with this task. One unusual thing to note is the heavy amount of lead used on the A pillar past repair, that typically means these repairs plate very old…. Probably in the 60’s or 70’s

Here are some shots of the must troubled areas.

Hopefully the 1958+ four tab hood will be updated to a period correct one. I had that same style front hood for my 1957 convertible and had my metal guy drilled out the spot welds for the inner support structure and replaced it with the correct year one. I found a donor hood that had been cut in half back in the day to make a Baja hood. My metal guy was able to take the inner support structure out of that donor one and weld it to my 1958-1959 hood so now it looks correct when the hood is open.

Hey there. I agree with you. We should make it as correct as possible. I have been out of the shop for 3 weeks and will return in 2 more. In the mean time I will try to track down a good donor for the inner structure. In fact I will see about chasing down another hood entirely. Stay tuned.

There is one for sale in Nine Mile Falls, WA on Facebook marketplace right now for a really good price if you have a way to get it shipped. I guess you could buy it and ask the seller to cut out the inner support sections to make it less expensive to ship,

Nice.

That hand air hammer is pretty neat. The silver part is a palm air nailer for driving nails in close quarters. Looks like a nice adaptation.

YeSir!!!

For years now’ folks have been rocking the palm nailer with homemade dies. I never got around to trying it. I always had my I on the Eckold
hand held hammer that was designed/ purpose built for metal shaping but it was always out of my price range. When I first came across the Ox hammer I admit I was a bit sceptic so didn’t give it much thought. Then I started seeing folks giving excellent feedback and I decided to take a chance. It’s fantastic… I was really Impressed.

I would say it’s been about 15 years or more since I first saw the nailer being used but instead of trying it I just used the same concept of custom handmade dies but just used the good old air hammer. It served me well… in fact I still have applications to use it, like flow forming and such. You can never have to many useful tools
