Are there two holes (running vertical) on that closet down by the floor? _________________ Your Vanagon sucks, Stop waving at me.

Hi Jim,
Super cool early SO42 you have. I have learned that there are anomalies when it comes to SO42, and your bus not having a fabrik tag is one of them. I would say yours is within the first 360 built SO42s.
The bus pictured above is 6 vins older than yours with fabrik tag 350. I would guess yours would have been somewhere around that number.
Your bus is still very early, being roughly the 20th oldest SO42s still known to exist. _________________

Does anyone know if the Leviton outlet came originally painted? The one that Leviton was selling back in the 80s/90s comes painted (see image below)
My Leviton outlet looks like it has no paint on it, but a lot could have happen in 58 years. I have included a picture of Joey's outlet on his 18k mile SO42 and I can't tell if it was originally painted.
Thoughts?

I had a '65 VG/BW no port code no westy Mcode SO42:
There was also this 66:[img]https://www.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/pix/1080719.jpg[/img
[img]https://www.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/pix/1080713.jpg[/img
I haven't tried to keep track, just didn't know if you knew these two. |
Hi Clara,
The three I know of is Lou's old one that is currently for sale and repainted, your old '65, and the '66 you posted. That is it.
Do you know where your '65 went? That is such a monster bus with it being no port code, locking ignition, tin top, two-tone, and mcoded for safaris
I can't remember where I saw a pic of the '66 after the pictures you posted of it at Woodburn, but it was in Gene Langan's collection in CT. Not sure if he still owns it. I spent an hour trying to find the picture but I couldn't.

I didn’t realize there were so few. I like tin tops.
I sold that 65 SO42 back in 2006. It was a cool bus.
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php...0f36ce2803
It went to FBI VW in Wales. They sold it, so it’s possibly somewhere in the UK
Fwiw, the camper lights were missing when I got it, I put in the kind I found, not the slotted kind. I don’t know which version it came with
It did NOT have an electrical outlet/ shore power
It did NOT have brackets for child cot. Probably because of the safaris _________________ The Obsolete Air-Cooled Documentation Project http://oacdp.org/ |

Very interesting Clara. My bus is mcoded for safaris and has the child cot brackets. Below is a pic of another SO42 that i know of that is mcoded for safaris that also has the child cot brackets. However, both mine and the bus below are '67 model buses. Maybe it was an early feature to not add the brackets on mcoded safari window buses?

What is this plate called? I opened my cargo door yesterday and I see it in my bucket of parts. I vaguely recall buying it, can't locate documentation on it and I can only assume it is supported by 2 screws into the wood panel. Does anyone have a closeup of that?
You can see it on this SO42, zoom in.

Yes, often missing and secured by the wood panel screws.
More detail here.

Looks like the SO42 formerly identified as Fabrik "0002" is in fact "0052"

Correct, the 5 was lightly stamped and difficult to see in that first pic of the Fabrik plate. In this pic you can see it more clearly.

Interesting to note that by 0052 it was already sporting the aluminum drip rail tent attachment. I wasn't aware that the add-a-room style tent was offered that early in 1965

Nice, it looks like someone recovered that bus?! |
Yes it looks like that to me.
This bus was on Thom's Vintagebus.com registry. I don't know how long ago Thom stopped the registry or when this bus was added to his registry, but the registry stated it was in Wisconsin. It is currently listed on Facebook Marketplace in Michigan. What I find funny is on the Vintage Bus registry, the fabrik # was listed as 52, but after studying the picture of the fabrik tag earlier in this thread, I thought it was a typo. I always thought it was interesting that the build date and vin were later than four other known SO42s including yours. It makes a lot of sense that it is #52 and not #2.
VelvetGreen's Fabrik #14 is back to being the oldest known SO42
So who is going to step up and put this rust bucket back on the road?!?!? _________________

I'm really tempted to make an offer on that bus and haul it home.
I'm pretty sure the tent and rails were an option from the onset of the so42 package. The early '65 Pop top I posted on page 13 of this thread has them, it has a Feb 3, 1965 build date. I'm pretty sure the holes in the drip rail on mine were for the rail. It's build date is jan 20, 1965, fabrik no 0021. And 0052 has them. _________________ 1987 Syncro Westfalia powered by Subaru

I recently dug up some interior lights for the SO42 in my storage unit, they are in really nice condition.. I've tried adding photo's in the gallery (twice) but they don't appear.
It's the later export style..
I had bought these approx 15yrs ago to fit into my bus but it never happened and not sure if they will be installed.
Ive had a look around but I can't seem to find any so wondered what the going rate is for a set..? _________________ oUr rOaDTrIp adVeNTuReS

Hazetguy has a pair currently listed in the Classifieds for $110 USD shipped. The ad is a month old. I don't think it is a bad price. However, if you wanted to move them quickly, I would place an ad at a lower price.

I've now managed to upload pictures in the gallery.
