I have a 1970 ghia coupe. Generator red light came on for 2 or 3 minutes then went off...drove home after with no further red light on....new battery at 12.6v.....charging cycles thru 12.5 to 13.4ish to 14.5ish to 15ish then cycles like this depending on revs..should i be concerned,?...wondering if it's the voltage regulator or generator causing it?.....thanks

Could be the brushes in the generator lost good contact for a few minutes, that happened to me before. You can see the brushes through the openings in the rear of the generator. The brushes wear due to arcing as the generator spins; spring clips push the brushes down to keep contact on the commutator. Sometimes a brush will get stuck, wear a bit, then lose contact. If it happens again, check the brushes for contact against the commutator. You can pull the brushes out and clean the track that they slide in.

Here's a photo looking in the generator opening. The spring clip is the curved metal in the opening and the brush is the rectangular metal/carbon piece under the spring clip. There are two brushes, one on each side.

Might be other reasons also, but it's hard to diagnose if it's working okay now.

It might be a good idea to pull the top brush out and see how worn down it is. If worn just buy a new Set and replace both. The bottom one is easier to do if you take the fan belt off, loosen the generator bracket, remove the 4 bolts that hold the generator to the fan housing, and spin it around so the bottom brush is on top for easy access. Good luck-Bob

And don't forget to unhook the generator connections before spinning it.

Brushes and the commutator on the armature are like brake shoes and brake drums. If you replace one, shoes, you should turn the other, drums. When replacing the brushes you should also 'turn' the commutator on the armature so the new brushes will a new flat surface to connect with. Cool
