I am trying to work out my next step forwards with a 1971 1300 Standard beetle I recently picked up.

It would have been a 1300 dual port from the factory but has been rebuilt into a 1641cc dual port with a SCAT C20 cam and a free flow exhaust.

It runs pretty bad when cold and coughs and splutters even when warmed up. I've done some digging and it has the following fitted:

Carburetor : 31 PICT-3 original VW/Solex with a rebuild kit electric choke does not work and its not documented what jetting it has.
Distributor: 021178009 original VW/Bosch but with new points and condenser.

I'm aware the 009 distributor could be half the issue, and I am considering a 123 Ignition distributor to replace it so I can swap between the different spark curves to find the best one for this motor

The 31 PICT-3 is not the right carb for a 1600 never mind a 1641cc motor. I wanted to get a restored 34 PICT - 3 from VolkzBitz but they do not offer oversea shipping. What is my next best option?

Do you have any friends states side who could purchase it for you and send it over for you? Buy a core and have someone local to you rebuild it or teach yourself to do it? Plenty of tutorials out there. Welcome to VW’s and TheSamba!

Find a local club. You live in a big city.
