Since you are interested in originality you can get rid of the fuel filter altogether. The engines never left the factory with one in place. You should have a filter sock at your gas tank exit and an original fuel pump had a screen in it. Your fuel pump needs to be replaced with something closer to original design. I have three VW’s and have not run one of those plastic filters in ten years. I haven’t had any fuel issues. _________________ Roads Scholar

You have a sharp eye, Mr. Rome. I also noticed the absence of the rubber strip on the front bumper. It's there on the rear bumper, but coming loose at the end where it wraps around to the blind surface on the passenger's side.
My initial focus will be on operational issues, and as you suggest I will probably clean as I go in the engine bay. Purely cosmetic items, such as the bumper strip, may wait until winter. (Or not, if I get bored.) |

Thank you, I'll take that under advisement. I've already said that I put drivability over originality, so we'll have to see where I land with a fuel filter. I also owe you guys the diameter measurements of the fittings at the fuel pump and carburetor. I brought home a digital caliper from my hangar, but it seems I installed the hoses all the way on the barbs, and I can't get a clean measurement of the metal diameter without taking apart something that's presently working well. Rest assured, I will come back with measurements, but at a later time. I'm only doing light tinkering for the rest of the summer heat. (Which in Texas could last until November, but I won't make you guys wait that long.) |

Hello, David. Very nice Ghia. I have a 70 just south of you in Waco. If you are looking for parts and need experienced service. I can highly recommend the Bug Stop in Arlington. They do nice work and carry a lot of parts in stock. We just bought ours in March (after owning one 48 years ago, see below). We are watching for major VW events in the DFW area and may see you there sometime. _________________ Ghia again...after 48 years

Congratulations on acquiring the car David, it looks an absolute peach. That engine bay looks incredibly original - if other areas of the car are like that you have got a rare beast.
While it is lovely to keep things original, I would probably replace all hoses that petrol runs through, front and back, as modern fuel seems to perish hoses very quickly - you can get modern standard hosing that looks like the original with black nylon overbraid. I run those plastic filters, but outside the engine bay as others have said - alongside the gearbox is fairly easy to access with the car jacked up and the rear left wheel off.
Keep us updated and enjoy! |
