I have a 1956 Bug. The 6 wire turn signal switch that is on it says SWF and as a curved portion on the circuit board. Back in the 80's when I drove it, I recall it worked and cancelled the signal correctly. Car sat for 38 years. Now the lever won't say down for a left turn so I ordered an aftermarket unit commonly available. It works OK, just OK, but it will not cancel. It looks like a universal switch and the dogs (I don't know what to call them) don't seem to be as long or as BEEFY as the original. I spotted a unit for sale that says it is for a bus and it looks like the same setup as I took out. Any insight is really appreciated. Thanks. Willing to buy the bus one if they can ship. The first photo is the aftermarket that will not cancel. The 2nd and 3rd photos are of the unit from my car that won't stay in the left turn position. Both fit in the housing ok. The last photo is the one I am considering..

myself , id try n clean the original one first , i see some paint over spray on the shaft and here n there like on the springs n such , a little Jasco paint stripper there n rinse , now a little de-greaser n a toothbrush n rinse . now dip the switch in citric acid for a maybe 5 minutes , take it out and rinse , now with tiny brass brushes you make all the metal on that switch glean look like brand new brushing n cleaning every nook n cranny , i also use 4000 steel wool where you can , blow it all out clean n dry with compressed air ........ now a tiny drop of thin like watch oil on the movement n give it a try ...i make a lot of old dead stuff work n look pretty good again . worth a shot to keep the original parts .
im not sure if the bus switch is exacly the same , the switch housing is a bigger diameter for the bus but the switch may be the same ......some bus switches had a bent arm . so i cant coment on all this but it prolly isnt nuch better than your original especially if you clean it up , its a fairly simple device to clean up .
its not so much an electrical device as its a mechanical switch that needs to be cleaned up .
i have cleaned up a few of this very same switch , it all depends how dirty it is as what it might take to get it working . may not need every step i mentioned . |
