ok, i FINALLY got this twin plug distributor built
i like it, now i have to find time to test it.
i was wondering if i could sell this sort of thing, but i spent 30hrs building this, so not real practical for me, i think i could have a shop make the main parts, then i just got to do assembly. i was thinking of offering the kit 3 different ways
1 - DIY - i sell parts and drawings and instructions, you build it yourself with your distibutors
2 - you send me your distributors, i put it all together
3 - i do it, all
now i used two 009, but no reason to limit it to that, you could even use 2 different distirbutors if you wanted to. what would happen with a 356 distributrior and a 912 working together? good or not? might be worth a try
i have no idea what someone would charge to make the parts, is anyone interested? in which option? if i can get 5-10 folks that want it, i could get a price,
your thoughts? _________________ Volkaholic |

Wow looks nice ...I had 2 porsche 356 carerra 4 cam distributors and sold them a few years back since I wasn't doing anything with them regerted selling them I practically gave them away .... now thinking of it.. that would of been cool to use those distributors like your design... I love the look of the porsche 4 cam distributors but those things are Pricey now days to bad they weren't cheaper that would be nice to see those in a vintage speed motor ....but keep up work on your kit hope you can produce more kits hope I could own one 1 day ... |

There is always something cool about building it yourself, but wouldn't this do what you want just about out of the box? _________________

yes it would, i used to make those, but this looks cooler, and allows you to adjust timing independently, plus you can run different timing curves if you want, _________________ Volkaholic |

Its a lot of money basicly just for a new shaft, adapter plate and a rotor & cap from a Nissan.
I have been thinking about making my own version of the 123 TS because you - DO - get the 2D programmable part along with it, and it will still be sort of old school.
The dual distributor solution is definitely cool and an attention getter. The problem is the timing and the advance curve. That will take a substansial amount of trial & error beore you get that right for a given engine. But doable. _________________ https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=435993 |

i have been thinking about getting back into making twin plug distributors for sale, i used to build the datsun cap twin plug, but now i have the 2 distributors connected by a timing belt, i think it looks super cool + you can easy adjust the timing of each, even run different distributors, however i spent 70 hrs building mine, so i just dont have time to do the building,
so i am getting pricing on having a shop cnc the parts for me
anyone interested? i was thinking of offering the dual distributor setup in several ways, depending on what level the customer wants to go to
1 cheapest - i supply cnc parts, and supplier parts list and instructions on building it yourself, customer supplies distributors and builds it
2 customer supplies me with 2 distributors, i build it for them
3 i build it all, supply new distributors, various options on type
what do you think? i dont have any pricing yet, if you are interested, PM me and we can discuss, if i can get 5 people to commit, put down a downpayment of some kind, i will get the cnc work done _________________ Volkaholic |

What are you using for the actual distributor?
I hope not aftermarket Chinese 009s. _________________ Glenn

Any idea on cost?
Plus the cost of converting the heads to dual plug.
Precision Matters sells a dual distributor setup for the 356/912. A high quality unit with a equally high price. But his is a turn key, meaning it includes the head work and installation.

well i was thinking about asking $250 as a down payment, once i get 5 orders, i get the parts made, at this point i am kinda guessing on sale price, as i dont have firm quotes on the cnc parts,
it is 5 parts, 4 are alum, 1 is 304ss, 2 are made on lathe, 3 made on a mill
1st guess on pricing
option 1 - i supply parts, instructions, and vendor list, you supply distributors and you build it $400, i think most guys on this site would prefer this option, but i could be wrong
option 2 - you supply 2 distributors, i build it $600
option 3, i supply all parts, i build it = $900
plus i can powdercoat it for a little bit more,,,
am i totally nuts? does this seem reasonable, remember, this is just a first pass at this, i dont have firm numbers yet, so price could go up or down _________________ Volkaholic |

Price is an issue, VW owners are notoriously cheap.
Prices for crankfire system are lower and the gains of dual plug might not be worth the difference
Remember, they still have to have the heads modified for dual plugs.
Are they belt or gear driven? Porsche 964 had belt drive dual distributors and had chronic issues with the belt . _________________ Glenn

ok, i got 1 guy interested in my belt drive dual distributor set up
calling all twin plug geeks! now is the time to commit!
he wants 1,
i want 2
so i am up to 3 units, i need at least 6 (3 more) so i can get the parts machined by someone else.
any takers?
i am asking $250 downpayment
i got lots of ways you can pay, including used firearms,,,,,,
total cost? not sure yet until i get a price quote on the parts, once i have it, i will tell you what your cost will be, if you dont like it, i will refund you money,,, and not get the parts made yet either.
so get serious and decide if you want to take the grand plunge into twin plug fun and games! _________________ Volkaholic |
