| I have a 1978 Thing (made in Mexico) that has a bad ignition switch. I have the steering wheel off, but I can not get the plastic shroud off from around the steering column. This is a single piece shroud and all I can find online refers to a 2 piece shroud. Any suggestions? |

Hi
Yes, it's been made of plastic since mid-1974.
Sometimes it melts a little in the heat and shrinks, slip downwards.

I just got a 74 Thing and I'm looking for one.
I have learned that the 73's are metal and starting in 74 they went to plastic re: The Thing Shop, they do not have them and I'm having a hard time finding one.
I'm no help in the disassembly area but I would just advise to go slow as to not break it.
Good luck and please post your findings.

This is the part that I'm looking for and I've looked in the Classifieds and no luck.
I found it at Bug City see below I've never worked with them before.
When I emailed them about this part they were very responsive.
I cannot add this part to the cart so it must not be available.
I called today but it just rang but I'll try again tomorrow.
It's always the small little parts that drive you to distraction.

I finally was able to purchase the parts by doing a Google search that lead to a post on this site that had a link to Bug City that worked.
Very odd but it worked.
Thanks for the link to the page for the install directions.
