Just in case you've been thinking of switching to an ATC blade style fuse box ...
Torque Resto has them on sale this weekend for '73-'74 Things. These are very well made and configured exactly like the originals. The original fuse cover even fits.

I have one in the Thing and one in the Ghia. The one in the Thing is a little tight with all the wiring back there but I like it. _________________ - 1973 Thing, 1970 Ghia, some LandCruisers and an old Ambulance |

Same with my '63 and '69 bugs. It stands taller than the original and I found that the wiring cover can press against it. My workaround was to add piggybacks on the forward (fused side) terminals and bend the piggybacks so the wires cleared the cover when connected to them. _________________ Tom

mo money spent....
looks like an amazing product that I can't believe is even made. price was quite fair for this item.
I have been driving my Thing now all summer long. Sadly getting soon to have to park it for the MN winter. now that it is getting dark earlier, I have been having to kinda wiggle the fuses because I loose a light. or Saturday it was my turn signal I noticed was not blinking. So i thought some real serious cleaning of fuses was going to be in order.
this product looks like it will take all my loose/bad connection fuse issues away in such a short amount of time.
thank you! |

Ordered one last night $69.00 for my 74 Thing I'm hoping this will be a good start to upgrade the system and help me to sort out some electrical problems.
If I like this I'll upgrade my other VW's. _________________ 73 Thing

I received my Torque Resto Fuse Box a few days ago and it looks like a very well made device.
All of the blade fuses are 7.5 amp.
I emailed Torque why are all the fuses are 7.5 and they quicky responded that from the factory all of the fuses where 8 amp and over the years people have added the 15s and 20s.
I've been in the VW hobby since the late 70's and I've always have seen the Red White and Blue fuses.......
Please advice.
Thanks

According to the wiring diagram for a '73 Thing, nine of the fuses are 8A (white) and and one is 16A (red). If you are seeing a different arrangement of fuses than is shown in the wiring diagram, either the wiring has been modified by a PO or the incorrect fuses are being used in some fuse box locations.
Here is the link to the diagram for a '73 Thing, I didn't see one specifically for the '74.

You could also check the owner's manual for the fuse info. On p.36 of the '73 owner's manual it shows all fuses as being 8A, so not consistent with the wiring diagram for that year. Maybe someone in the Thing Forum can shed some light on why the info in the wiring diagram is different than shown in the owner's manual.

The ATC blade fuses are not the exact amperage as the old style torpedo fuses. It is fine to use a 7.5A ATC in place of an 8A torpedo and a 15A ATC in place of a 16A torpedo. _________________ Tom

| The '74 model can run all 8 amp fuses without a problem, I have done it for over 25 years. The '74 model came from the factory without the gas heater or a cigarette lighter. If you have added the lighter then you may want to go with a 16 amp fuse. You should never see a blue fuse in a stock Thing. |
